Just trying to see if I can get some opinion my opinion is a good possibility a staple. It don't make it to the rim it stays inside the main part of the coin itself. It's hard not to have some kinda damage with out hitting the rim itself. I would love to hear some opinion on this coin I was just moving a box of silver out of the way and remember this coin so what do you guys think. I done told you what I think so less see I could be way off I'm going from distance and size.

Not sure a staple could have made such a mark (on the reverse, right?)...would have taken a lot of pressure plus just doesn't quite match, to me. Hard to say...whatever it was, thankfully not on an otherwise AU or MS coin.

It’s PMD, a scratch, which could have been caused by a staple. You can see metal pushed to both sides.

It's a scratch. It's not possible to know what caused it. Just damage.

Possible damage from being dug by a careless metal detectorist.
    Also....
Beware the mercury & wash your hands after handling.

That's why i always wear mercury gloves when handling, it counteracts the mercury in the dime.

You know, we get a lot of newcomers to the hobby that just might believe this BS. This is Coin Talk, not Etsy.

Since when did they put mercury in Mercury Dimes?

Well, I think it's an ice pick. I got an ice pick, that's why. I don't think it's a screwdriver. I also got a screwdriver. JMO.

PMD, lot of wear also. The letters and logo are pretty much intact, it's silver, and it's a keeper in my opinion. Thanks for posting it.

    Hi eddiespin,
I had a hunting partner that used a blunted icepick. He had such a soft touch I never witnessed him scratching any silver coin dug. (And he unearthed quite a few)
Personally, I'd dig out plugs around the coin.

My poor old Mom used to use coins as a thimble when sewing when us kids would run off with the real thimble. I am sure the needle could have slipped as she pushed the needle through the denim making the scratch. That was after we got "whomped" for losing the thimble. Thinking it was a staple that scratched it though.

All this dime talk reminds me of my mom's 'middle' sister, Aunt Nola.
She was a waitress for 35 years until the mid 1960's when she opened her small BBQ Shack. Before that, When I was a teen she heard I collected coins so she let me go through all the mercury dimes she had save from the many years of waitressing & choose 5 dimes.
(She had saved every Mercury dime she ever received in tips because she like the design.)
I recall picking out a 1931-D Au condition and a 1926-S XF out of her small cedar chest full to the top. When silver hit $40/ounce in the great silver boom she sold them all for melt...$28,000.00 worth,
Alas, My dimes were sold in later teen years!

Addendum: Nola lived in the small Tx town of Madisonville, was one of my favorite aunts, and ALWAYS packed a short-nose 38 in her purse!
