I know the 92D close AM is rare, but according to prices the 98 and 2000 wide AM and the 95 error cent seem to be common though I have searched over $500 dollars in cents since August and have yet to find one. I am not much for looking at RPM's or stuff you need a microscope for, but I was just curious about more common errors like the '98,'00, or the '95 as far as how hard they are to find. I would also like to know about other accepted errors, not all that stuff on Ebay that people claim are errors that no one has ever heard of and can barely see in the picture. Any help with errors would be appreciated and I would like to search for some of the RPM's if you could tell me which ones are easy to spot and how. Thanks Kent
I'm nor sure about the numbers on those WAMs, but here's a good place to start with varieties and errors of the Lincoln Cent. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Top50.html
Why are they hare to find even though they are common? Well let's just look at the 98 WAM. Since it is common we will assume the die ran for its entire life and was not retired early. That would mean a mintage of roughly one million coins. Now if you could somehow gather together all of just the 1998 P mint cents and mixed them in an then searched them for the WAM, you would expect to find roughly one coin per bag of 5,000 cents. Now say we mix that million into ALL of the 1998 cents and then searched. You would then expect to find one coin in a little more than two bags of cents. But there have been eleven years of cent production since 1998. If we mix that million coins into that amount you would then expect to find one out of every 23 bags or $1150 worth. But it gets even worse than that since there are also the cents struck before 1998 to consider as well. But you can see that searching $500 worth it is not too surprising that you haven't found one yet. And remember this is for one of the COMMON ones.
Thanks that put it into perspective. I hadn't even thought of it that way, but that is exactly what I should have done. Thanks again Kent
In 2006 I found 2 1995 DDOs, and last year I found 1 2000 wide and 1 1998 wide. God lord I must have searched through boxes and boxes of rolls. Funny thing is, I found those in my pocket change.
"Funny thing is, I found those in my pocket change." Same here. I can honestly say that the finds I have had in pocket change are far better than in roll searching. I have a 1995-P DDO that I actually found on the ground a few years ago. Of course it does not make any sense, but as they say "good things will come your way when you least expect it"
I'd still like to know how many 1999 WAMs have been reported found. That question was posed on another forum with a great variety of answers.
According to Ken Potter, who is an expert on variety errors, there are about 300 1999 wide A M's in all grades. This is his guestamate. I would imagine there are twice that many. Ebay always has some listed but very few high grade 1999 wide A M's. This makes them even rarer. I've been very, very fortunate to have found two. One being MS65 red. I've seen MS66's listed and I think one MS67.
Probably bunches. Even though the 1998 is supposed to be scarcer than the 2000, I have found, as have other posters, many more 1998s than 2000s. (9 to 3)
Same here... I have at least 7-8 1998s and only 3 2000s. Thought I also had a 1999 but I cannot locate it anywhere. Could be wrong about the date as I have not seen it in quite a while. Know it's a wide AM though. I would be much better of to start putting "lesser" varieties into a book, but I've been telling myself this for years. Thanks!
I have found only 2 W /AM's an EF-Au 1999 and this MS66 2000 that was at a yard sale & was in a open Cheerios 1st 10,000 made but being open and taped back so that is why Ngc it has no Cheerios detail.
