Should She Be Interred in TPG Plastic?

I know that sending gold to the TPG is pretty much a waste of fifty bucks. Thing is, this double eagle is just so nice, I almost hate the thought of it getting damaged because she isn’t interred. the reverse is virtually flawless. In the last photo I tried to show what appears to be a small rub in front of her face…… Should she go to the TPG?

Nice looking coin. Unless you want /need authentication and a grade, you might place it in an air tite or a DIY slab. Of course a TPG entombment would make it easier to sell.

 

Pretty coin. I would have it graded but that's just me. I'm trying to stay with NGC and PCGS slabs in my type set.

 

I personally would feel better having any nice coins in a holder. But might be fun to get a trueview.

I'd probably just put it in an airtite...unless you really want it graded. You said your main concern is protection and an airtite will do the job just as well as a slab.

Couldn't disagree more with this. Gold especially old gold is basically a must to submit and contains some of the most heavily counterfeited series in all of numismatics. It's worth it for the authentication

 

That is a very good point. Yes, counterfeit gold is a huge concern these days. That may be the deciding factor for me. My largest concern is eliminating problems for my heirs since I won’t be here to argue authenticity for them. Thanks.

 

I would do it also . I would be proud to own a coin of that Magnitude ! That's on my bucket list of coins .

 

I would get it graded although 1904 is the most common date in the series. If genuine, the lowest grade you will get is MS-64, which makes it collector’s item. With the lower grading standards, you could luck out with an MS-65. That would be like winning a small lottery.

 

Send her in. You’ll be glad you did.

 

If that's the major concern it's a no brainier to have anything of value graded. No easier way for them to know whats what than that and the slab will keep them from trying to make them "look pretty" or anything like that and accidental damage

 

I guess it depends on which of these is the real reason you are thinking about getting it slabbed. If it's solely about protection...an airtite will do the job just as well as a slab for a lot less money. If authentication for your heirs is a big reason then sending it to a TPG is the way to go.

At the end of the day, it's only $50. The coin is worth north of $2000. If you're on the fence, then just send it in.

 

I'd send it in. Given today's market, getting it slabbed makes the most sense. I wholeheartedly agree with most of the previous comments.

 

Submit it...you'll be glad you did. Safety, security/protection, authentication, and of course if ever selling. I also think...IMO...that it's not the same protection as an airtite, but better...more rigid/protective from breakage/damage and more air-tight than the airtite, plus the other.

 

Send it in Randy. Makes it easier for resale. BTW the rays are mesmerizing!

 

I would choose very carefully which TPG to send it to, but I would send it in to be graded. This is coming from a guy who chooses not to use TPG's as a general rule. Gold yes, silver no. Just my opinion, good luck.

With the price of even scrap gold, if I were buying a gold coin for numismatic purposes, I wouldn't buy a raw one at today's prices. If it wasn't slabbed, I wouldn't even consider it.
