Nice job. You've learned much. This is what the bag says. But, if you ever visit the mint gift shop the word "penny" is all over the place. While the word "cent" is technically correct, "penny" is acceptable slang in this country. The only people who really care are the numismatists who want to point it out. LOL.
All good things to have learned. IMHO, you forgot a huge CT tenon: Buy the Book before the Coin and did you mean to say that Coin Chat is a great group of people? (Referring to that forum?) or CoinTalk? Either way, congrats! You’ve listened better than most
Plenty of product packaging literally says Penny as well https://catalog.usmint.gov/on/deman...454/images/hi-res/coins/Proof-Sets/21rg_b.jpg
#10 has seemed to be the most emphatic of all CT members' pet peeves. Fun Factoid: I had an argument on line with an e-Bay seller who insisted on using "double-die" for a coin that was an obvious machine doubling. When I questioned him, he "doubled down" and questioned my knowledge on coin collecting while touting his own membership in several numismatic organizations. Needless to say, I was horrified that this individual claimed coin collecting knowledge and membership in several respected organizations as an excuse to still call the coin a "double-die". He then went on to state that "everyone" calls it "double-die" and I needed to learn my facts. When I mentioned CT, he brushed me off and stated that no one in the know pays attention to those self-described experts. Nuff said. I then told him that he was a disgrace to the numismatic world and go sell on Etsy and publish on You-Tube. Haven't heard from him since!
It's also a disgrace to give someone such a hard time over something so stupid. Both words were used in books and publications for many years. Many old timers just don't care if they leave off the d. At the same time the seller should not be trying to sell a coin with MD as true die doubling.
Glad to see new members paying attention. Concerning the widow's mite, ALL ancients are being made today if you go to shady enough places. Even real, untold hundreds of thousands of these have been found. If not for biblical interest, they would not be bought out of a $1 pick box.
And unfortunately neither widow's mites specifically nor ancient coins in general have a monopoly on the same reality. https://www.ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection/top/united-states/ https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...-coin-series-at-risk-from-counterfeiting.html https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/chinese-coin-counterfeiting-ring-4071202 https://www.coinagemag.com/counterfeit-united-states-coins-made-for-circulation/
I am a new member as well; I didn't make an account until I'd been reading the forum for several months. It was almost "all Greek" to me at first, but the more I read here, the more I learn. I've also noticed that in researching different currencies that have been given to me, sometimes this forum is the ONLY one on the internet that has the answer! So many intelligent people are here and I get to learn from them!
