I was just reading another thread "C.G.A in the news" and Was thinking about doing an experiment? The issue is how consistent t.p.g,s are and if they would assign Different grade,s for a note that was already graded by the other For instance lets say i have a note that is graded by, Lets say For the sake of argument P.M.G it,s a 67 (This is the grade They have given it) So i go to P.C.G.S with the identical note What would you think there grade would be? The same? Lower? Higher? Would be interested in anybody,s else,s results??
This practice of "cracking out" coins was & more then likely still being done quite often in coin collecting hoping to get for an example;NGC MS68 to a PCGS MS69 . I don't know how often it is done in paper, but your idea sounds intresting but add CGA first,PMG second and PCGS third,it would be intresting to see the ranges in grading but could be expensive for 3 gradings !
I actually have a note in mind, That iam thinking about doing this with The data could be very useful to other,s who are wondering the same?? I will keep the thread posted!!
If you do don't post the note in advance on CT or they(the 3 TPGs) will have the serial #s to look out for ,if you cut them out of the holders before each new submission. ! I bet 2 of them come very close in grade ! Bob
If your suggesting sending in a small size current GEM68 slabbed by say, one of the big 2, I wouldn't have a prob if it came back anywhere from GEM66 to GEM69 from the other or the "also ran". For that matter, any graded note you resubmit will most likely come back the same of within a grade either way. The trick is to be connected by the "also ran" for a favorable grade..........of course that will cost ya but is should be lucrative for all. Except of course the poor slob buyer who's ignorant (not supid) enough to buy a slabbed note from the infamous "also ran"..
Actually iam building out a set, The note that iam trying to get my hands on Is very elusive, I did find one but its not in the grading service i need, But it Is one of the big two! So iam hoping for a similar grade which will make me Very Happy Also i need to add this!! I was just on e-bay and found some suspect grading By another grading service that seems to be OVER GRADING THERE NOTES! The TPG starts with an "R" many that i see on there are 68,S rare in other TPG,S but common in there,s???????? Avoid
I also saw thr "R" & wasn't thinking of them. What ever you choose is certainly your best judgment & the results would be interesting for all of us thinking of slabbing our collections. Many of us have family that will inherit our collections and don't collect coins or currency .You will at least know that they will have a fair chance of getting what your collection is worth if you choose a honest grading company.
Absolutely! Honest TPG being the key. Avoid using CXX at all cost. This will most likely reduce the value by 30%+.
Luckily I only have one in my collect of currency & will get it re-graded. But have 80% w/no grading (raw) so I have to start after the holidays getting everything graded for my family who know nothing about coin or currency.
I was just reading another thread that further backs up previous statements Regarding "XXX" grading it seems the well known Auction houses such as Heritage Auction,s will not accept there notes at all!!! Thats a huge blow for Someone that has made a XXX purchase, They only accept PCGS and PMG The two leaders in tpg and that only makes sense. Something to remember when making your purchases stay with the top Two for maximum value retention, I have seen other tpg selling high grade Notes by the same person starting with an "R" will not mention the guys Name but it seems very suspect to me!!!!! Would not even make an offer On these notes and of course its on e-bay would think they would tighten Up there standards here to avoid another "XXX" scandal !!
Well, to save the most money, you might just search online and you will find dozens of people who have tried said experiment... May save you some time as well... Also, it seems with serial numbers on notes it would make it easier for the TPG's to crosscheck with each other anyway... Wonder if they do that? Seems it would be mutually beneficial...
Well the main reason iam doing it is Because i found a note that is graded By PMG that i need graded by PCGS, Trying to build out a set!!
PCGS vs PMG Hi Rusty, Building a set with PCGS is a smart move,I have found at least with coins that PCGS even though a bit stricter with giving grades out then NGC . Is this true with currency also in your opinion ?
************ PCGS and PMG are stricter in terms of have the skill sets to acurratley grade notes. I would change "sticter" to honest, unlike the "other" guy....
*********************** Yes, with currency having serial numbers there are numerous "consensus reports" out there that track currency in terms of previous TPG grades given, when sold, and how many of certain FR notes that have been recorded as "known to exist", etc. It's far from an exact science since so many notes are raw and unrecorded in private collectors hands. In terms of TPG's cross checking previously graded notes. That's a great question and a subject much discussed. The two real TPG's will generally grade notes without regard to previous assigned grades. Now that's up for discussion encil: . I would imagine that if the TPG reviews the note and assigns it say, a GEM 65 and discover that it was once graded AU53, they would scratch their head and call over their colleagues for a "what am I missing here" discussion. Keep in mind that in currency, the difference between AU and GEM can be extremely subtle. Would like to hear others opinion on that subject.
Payton,I agree %100 with you the other guys taken out of the picture, my question is : Is pcgs & PMG side by side with the same note ,who is the more accurate true grader ,not higher or lower but more accurate in your opinion,I have found that PCGS commands a higer selling price on coins & was intrested if this held true with currency ?
***************************** There is so much human judgement involved it's tough to say. The key is that this judgement is honest and professional. I believe them to be equally accurate. You could cut out a PCGS GEM 67 and sent to PMG and get a GEM65 or 66. Or visa versa on any given day. But the key is if you did this little drill on thousands of notes you would not see any noticable variance. IMHO.
