News at PCGS I'm glad they are going to announce some customer-friendly innovations. I prefer their holders to NGC's or ANACS and their style of grading. With the most powerful computers, software, and technology available, the grading services are probably using artificial intelligence and optical scanners to screen coins. It is becoming cheaper and cheaper to accurately grade coins. Competition can be a good thing, but too much competition can lead to a "race to the bottom", where the human dimension is overlooked for the sake of the bottom line. Ultimately, coin collecting should be a pleasant experience. The last thing any of us want is to see is the hobby become over-analyzed and overly-technical. I enjoy the analytical process if it is a means to understanding and appreciation and if the process limits legal and other problems.
I have read that PCGS has already begun using computers to screen common coins, such as Morgan Dollars. I don't know whether this is true or not- if anyone could provide more information, that would be very interesting. I agree with what You said about coin collecting needing to remain enjoyable-- and if You're in this just to make money, chances are that You will eventually get soaked.
Haven't seen an update on this, either on this thread or the PCGS website. I would think January 7th Orlando FUN convention would be the time to have big announcements - maybe a little before.
Actually it hasn't. At least not in any way that would change a computer's ability to grade coins. People give computers a lot more credit than they deserve in regard to what they can do and what they cannot do.
