So I found another bizarre one going through my dad's coins. The reverse looks mangled. First thought was it got torched but there's details missing on the sunken portion but still there on the higher portions. The obverse looks like what the kids at school said would happen if you sneezed with your eyes open. It looks like his eye popped out. The first thing I learned here was that I have a lot to learn. So here's another mangled coin I need help with. Is this just another interesting PMD coin or is this another type of error I've never heard of?
Post Mint Damage.. The issue occurred after it left the US Mint. It doesn't mean to post a picture of Mint Damage
@YankeeDime, I'll tell you what you need to do. You need to familiarize yourself with the minting process. Why do you think we can tell you this obviously isn't a mint error? Well, there you go--because we're familiar with the minting process. Now, if you're just going out as quick as you're coming in, trying to determine if you're a millionaire, there's of course need for the study, you got the answer, that's enough. But you're here to hang on, not to go. That's what makes this imperative. There are only so many errors, believe it or not. I'm not talking about the freaks. Learn those major ones. Familiarize yourself with the minting process, and how they fit in. That's what we do. You might as well, too. Finally, when I try to advise study, I a lot of times get the, "I just got here, I'm trying real hard to learn, everybody has to start somewhere, I'm really a good person, just ask my cat," and on, and on, and on. I'm saying, don't go there. We already know it, believe it or not, and it's old, and I'm tired of it. Just take the advice, without excuses, for what it's worth. That would really be different. There are no excuses that hold up for not studying. The process. It's all over YouTube. Get friends with the basics. We'll get you the rest of the way, guarantee it.
@eddiespin I'm still waiting on my copy of the red book to arrive but in the meantime I'm working on getting familiar with the works. I've watched several vids on YouTube on the minting process and been trying to learn more about errors. One of the new errors I recently learned about was catastrophic die failure which some examples reminded me of the dime I posted. So I figured I'd dig it back out of the PMD coins I added it to and make sure because well, I'm in no way qualified to determine something like that, lol
Oh there's no question, you're one of of us. But there's the key, the process. Too many just blow that off. And the Red Book, that's the start. No resource is perfect, but this one's still the kid with all the candy. You don't have to buy one every year. I have two, the 1965 and a newer one. It's the go-to book for a lot of questions that pop up. You'll get a lot of use out of it, over time, you'll see.
