Storage dilema - Pages for plastic 2x2's?

Simple question for those of you with more experience than I. (Pretty much everyone here, lol)

I've been keeping some of my coins in the regular cardboard 2x2's and placing them in the 3 ring binder type pages for storage and display.

I've just acquired my first dozen Morgan's and would really rather prefer to keep these coins in the hard plastic type 2x2's, but they are too thick for the pages I put the cardboard ones in.

I saw the Eagle brand plastic 2x2's and pages, but don't really care for them as the assembly seems like a pain and the coin is ultimately still just being protected by the thin mylar strip.

If I were to grab some plastic 2x2's from Whitman, Marcus, or BCW (all of which I think measure 2x2x.25), is there a brand of page that has pockets thick enough to fit them into? I'd prefer the pages to just putting them in a box.

Thanks in advance. I've been looking all over the net but no one seems to give the measurements of the pockets' depth. This is where your first hand experience is valuable!

it probably wont look good, but they have pages with larger pockets

Do mean larger as in sized 2.5x2.5 to fit the Silver Eagle type "2x2's"? I wondered about that, but you are right. It would probably look pretty silly...assuming they fit.
No, I'm hoping there is a page actually designed to hold a quarter inch deep plastic 2x2 nice and snuggly. If there is, I haven't been able to find it, but the internet is a big place. They make them for cardboard 2x2's and slabs; figured the plastic 2x2's would be standard enough to warrant it's own page size.
If not, back to the drawing board.

Eagle makes a page that holds the mint capsules like they use on dollar Comm,s.
They should work. I use them to store Proof Silver Eagles.

I use the 2x2 + plastic pages method in a 3-ring binder. For most of my coins (Lincoln cents), I use Airtite holders. The Airtites fit nicely into quarter size 2x2's which fit into my plastic pages....it's a little tight, but they fit.

... you can double up on the mylar sheets if you're worried.... The assembly is a little bit of a pain (Just did 180 of them over the course of a few days and the tips of my thumbs are raw) but the holders really add some presentation quality over alternatives IMO and the mylar seems stronger than what you get on cardboard flips.

If you use your plastic 2x2s it wouldn't matter. The standard eagle pages will house these. They're only a hair more difficult to remove from the pages.

    Larry,
So for those I'd need to get some of the round airtite capsules to put the morgans in first? Would the size be the same?

    Badthad,
That could work for your cents, putting them in airtites and then the airtites in a bigger 2x2, but since I'm talking Morgans here, I don't think it would fit if I tried to put an airtite in a 2x2.

    WashQuartJesse,
Hmm. Ya, the Eagle page says their pockets are 1/5 inch deep as opposed to 1/4 in thickness on your average plastic 2x2. That's a small difference, so perhaps they could fit. I might just order a page and test it out.

I still find it difficult to believe that no one makes a page designed to hold plastic 2x2's. With so many people using them, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would prefer page display to just throwing them in a box. Grr. Is there an opportunity here? Would anyone else find 2x2 pages helpful?

I've seen some with 3x3 pockets and 4x4 as well. I have a couple 4x4 but the 2x2 flips wont stay put, so haad to find some 4x4 flips. but those might be a bit hard to find

That would be the height and width, it's the depth I'm curious about...and no company seems to share. A 2in by 2in square would be sufficient so long as the depth was at least .25in and the square plastic 2x2 could fit right in.

I'm thinking the 2X2 Whitman holders will fit in these pages. Order one page and be sure you like them first. Some folks don't care for this type of storage because you now have two layers of plastic between you and the coin.

It looks like Eagle's page is down.

At first glance of your first link, it looked like those pages were designed just for round capsules. On second look, and given your thoughts, a square 2x2 could fit in them. What really differentiates their "encapsulated albums" from their 2x2 holder pages?

In reading the small print, their 2x2 page description says,
"They accommodate almost any 2x2 holder in addition to Eagle holders, however thin paper 2x2 holders fit somewhat loosely in the pockets designed for plastic holders." I'm thinking I'll give them a try. I'll let you guys know how they work out.

If anyone else reads this over the weekend, if you happen to know of a "for sure" page designed for plastic 2x2's, let me know. I'll plan to order the eagle pages on Monday and give them a shot.

Good question. Give them a call and ask or just buy a page of each and try it out before you decide what you like the best. I didn't take the time to look but is there any chance these are the same item (same item #)?

    I just emailed them.
The numbers are different, but it looks like they may use the same pages. Of course then that begs what the difference is between the encapsulated albums and the 2x2 albums...if they both use the same pages.
Argh. Nothing's ever easy, right?! :)

Hey, I also just stumbled upon BCW supplies. They have some great prices on both plastic 2x2's and pages they say fit the 2x2's. They say their plastic is PVC free and "archival quality", but their 2x2's have a paper insert they don't mention anything about other than the color so I don't know if they're sulfur free. Anyone ever use BCW? Might be a lessor expensive option than Eagle...though I'm totally familiar with getting what one pays for. :)

    Coin Pages

I would recommend a 1-BCW12T 12 pocket page. Although you page is a Vinyl page it should not hurt the coin in a plastic snap. Vinyl is stronger and stretches so the 12 pocket should give plenty of space for the 2x2 snap but should be tight enough that they don’t slide out.

The 9 pocket page works great with 2x3 slabs or graded coins. Again I would recommend a vinyl page for this type of application.

    Howdy Dana -

Question - do these vinyl pages you sell have any of the PVC softening agents present in them ?

    PVC – Polyvinyl chloride

PVC – Polyvinyl chloride, (IUPAC Poly(chloroethanediyl)) commonly abbreviated PVC, is a thermoplastic polymer. It is a vinyl polymer consisting of vinyl groups (ethenyls) that are bound to chlorine.

Polyvinyl chloride is the third most widely produced plastic, after polypropylene and polyethylene. Over 50% of PVC manufactured is used in construction, because it is cheap, durable, and easy to assemble. PVC production is expected to exceed 40 million tons by 2016.

It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates. In this form, it is used in clothing and upholstery, and to make flexible hoses and tubing, flooring, to roofing membranes, and electrical cable insulation. It is also commonly used in figurines and in inflatable products such as waterbeds, pool toys, and inflatable structures.

All vinyl products either pages or flips contain some type of plasticizers from all/any manufacturers. You cannot have a page or flip that does not have a plasticizer. You should never have a coin in direct contact with plasticizes vinyl for any extended period of time (a couple of weeks). Plasticizers will over time migrate from the vinyl. Vinyl pages would not affect coins in a plastic snap or plastic slab.

There are 2 basic type of plasticizers DEHP and BBzP, Lead can also be used as a slip agent in manufacture of soft vinyl. This is why you should always use a paper flip. The plasticizers will migrate onto the exterior of the paper flip, but will not migrate through the paper flip. BCW only uses BBzP for a plasticizer, and all our pages and vinyl flips are lead free. Lead is what will cause the dark toning of coins.

Sorry for the long answer, but as you can see there is a little more than a yes or no to questions.

I've seen some dealers use baseball card plastic pages for thick items. Might help you with that idea??????

And - BBzP = Butyl benzyl phthalate - which is what causes what is commonly called PVC contamination on coins.

Sorry Dana, but that stuff's a no-no for coins.
