That's just an older style font. I can't imagine that it was around for long after they slabbed that coin.

Another way to tell is look at the hologram on the back. This is a link to NGC warning of counterfeit holders, http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=954 . You cant just check the #. Counterfeiters will use the same #'s that are on registered coins, so when you look them up they appear real. You need to look at the complete slab to determine if it is genuine.

It is hard to tell from the image you posted, but it looks like there is a normal straight dash in the certification #, NGC uses a curved dash.

Every one of my older NGC slabs has a straight dash, and I have a number of them that look exactly like the slab in question (except for the fact that they have different coins. :)). Even the newer slabs have a straight dash -- it's tilted, but not curved.

The counterfeit advisory posted by NGC is certainly instructive, but the font being used on the counterfeits is something different altogether than what you're seeing here.

Here's a link to a rather expensive coin in exactly the same kind of holder as the one in question:

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=454&Lot_No=3059

There are numerous other varieties of NGC slabs with the thin font.

The slab doesn't look fake to me....looks like an older holder... Whats the problem?

There are many, many different types of TPG slabs. All of them, NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG - over the years the design, fonts etc. have changed. There is even a book on it written by a forum member - Conder101. The book was published in 2003, and there have been many additional changes since then even. As I understand it Conder is working on an update.

But around here someplace is a link to threads where Conder has posted about all of the new slabs which are not listed in his book. I'm sure that within a day or two he will see this thread and post about it.
