Hold on. My comp may be a misattributed B-4. I need to check the 1795 BB-51.

    Sorry. My B-3 Comp from Heritage was a Misattributed B-4. It's a B-4 R3 variety.

I have the die variety number for that 1796 dollar written on a sticker on the holder, but I don’t keep that information in my old brain. I know that it’s not a major rarity. I only have one Bust Dollar that qualifies for that.

You have to make an appointment and give up your first born to get into safe deposit boxes these days.

I rely on Heritage Archives for ID of varieties where I have no literature and create my own little diagnostic chart. In this case, the two listings were not helpful. One had no photos and the other was a misattributed B4.

Anyway, I now show 4 obverses and 4 reverses used in 1796. The B-3 and B-4 share an obverse. The B-4 has a unique Reverse and the B-3 shares a Reverse with B-1 and B-2 (and with a 1795).

Oh! And now I've found the Fake Obverse back to 2010 that started me on the 1796 1$.

Sellers are 1-1 removing a listing after being notified they were offering the unidentified counterfeit 1796 1$. I just reported the one who had not removed their listing before the item closes later today. The bid was over $100 already.

Oddly enough, both were categorized under 1796 Draped Bust Large Cents.

That classification was probably deliberate, to make folks think they are getting a real steal!

The coin in the civitas is a Vampire Hub piece but the coin has been worked on to try and hide the tale-tell features. Doen't matter though, once you know what to look for it jumps out as a fake.
