Sorry for the flurry of posts - I've been going through a few rolls of wheat pennies and finding fascinating (if badly damaged) coins. The good news is I'm on my last roll, so probably fewer wheat penny posts for a while. Speaking of badly damaged, I found a 1946S that seems to have ghosting on it, but the poor thing's been through hell, so I can't discount something else having happened to it. Any thoughts? Thanks for any opinions!
I don't know enough about it, to be honest. The closest thing I could find was this: http://www.error-ref.com/progressive-indirect-design-transfer/ that I got a link to from another thread. Edit: Bah @Kentucky beat me to it.
Found another 46S with this same issue in the roll. I guess we can assume it's a die error at this point. Or, well, variety I suppose.
Ah, looks like I'm not the first to find this. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1946-s-wheat-penny.348256/ Edit: Note that the above link is three years old.
PIDT isn't really a die error, it's a die wear/deterioration issue from the use of the dies. it's more of a die stage identifier than it is a error or variety.
