Even though I don’t seriously collect them these 2 coins found me when I bought a group of modern coins at a yard sale and these were in with them. I need help to ID them, and are they worth anything. Thank you in advance!
Left is Emperor Gallienus: Gallienus AR Antoninianus. Rome mint. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right / MARTI PACIFERO, Mars standing left, holding olive-branch, spear and shield, A in right field. Right - gimmie a few (unless someone finds it before me! lol) EDIT: The 2nd looks to have a reverse of Genius, holding Victory with a palm branch on the let. I'm not 100% certain on the emperor though. Maybe Crispus? D N FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES is what the obverse legend looks like to me.
That tiny left facing head really reminded me of Licinius IVN at first. Crispus is one of those unusual enough guys it’s nobody’s first thought haha
Yeah I was thinking Licinius II as well but it wasn't jiving with the rest of the legend. Figured it out in the end though
Another question......when I look at them through my 10x loupe, a lot of what I see looks like caked dirt around the devices, should I soak them overnight in distilled water to see if any of that loosens and can be taken off with a toothpick, or just leave them as-is?
I looks as if no one has pointed this out yet, so I'll chime in. The reverse of the one on the right (Crispus) is Jupiter, not genius. He is holding Victory on a globe, who is presenting him with a wreath, in his right hand and leaning on a scepter with his left. At his feet in front of him is an eagle with a wreath in its beak. The inscription is IOVI CONS-ERVATORI CAESS. You won't hurt this coin by soaking it in distilled water for a day or two. Then you might be able to use a toothpick or thorn to pick out some of the dirt.
Thanks! I was just guessing Genius when I couldn't figure out the emperor. Am used to seeing Genius reverses like that. I should've corrected myself when I figured out whose coin it was.
