Got all excited yesterday when I looked at the coin in the attached picture. Wow, a very rare D over reversed D!! A closer look revealed some strange stuff. The mintmark was very weird. Then I noticed what appeared like strike through letters and designs in the field. Then I noticed the R in LIBERTY was wrong. A quick google check, and guess what? It's a Henning counterfeit coin that's been in my coin album for 25 years! If you look closely at the picture you can see an eagle holding a wreath in its claws above the right side of the sideways D...it's head is just on the edge of the coin.
Not a Henning at all After doing some internet research, it looks like this is not a Henning, but is just too weird to be a real coin. Must be a counterfeit...here is a quick scan of the coin...
It is definitely counterfeit I just found a 1947-D with the exact same strange markings on it from the same pile of coins I was looking thru. It also has the most amazing thing on it...it looks like a man, with black pants and black hair, is sitting on the edge of Monticello holding up the mint mark. This is just unbelievable.
