I would like to resurrect this issue. I have a 1972 D Jefferson with missing features on Monticello. The small features on either side of the dome have a crosshatch in the middle of them on a typical Jefferson. I have one without these crosshatches. It looks like they may have been removed in a die polishing operation. I have attached photos of this coin and a typical Jefferson.
Normal, maybe a weaker strike than normal. The other photo you posted of the Rev. is from a new master Die (don't remember the exact date of change, but it was maybe 15 years ago or so) Your coin isn't missing anything but a stronger strike, and a new reverse die (like the one you posted) to have those design elements show.
I like the 6 full steps on the "typical" Jeff...no debate there (except if that +1 thing there would be 7)...!
I understand that this coin was produced with a worn die. However, I feel that the features that are missing from the dormers on either side of the dome are missing because of excessive polishing. In the Uncirculated 1972 D posted here you can see the cross members. On the subject coin you can clearly see the polish marks. Thank you for reviewing.
