I bought some proofs and discovered this on the '84'. It is in an air-tite.
Pardon the dust. The finger print I think is on the inside. Could this cloud be caused by cleaning? Check the 'S' mintmark. I don't know what this is either. Could someone have tried to replate it? Wouldn't that ruin the cameo? And those squiqqle marks around the '9'. This whole thing has me puzzled.

My guess is improper storage, although I've seen haze begin to form on proofs that have been stored reasonably well. The odd thing is the way the haze is taking over. That's an odd one Zeke.....

I guess there isn't any way to somehow remove this haze, is there?
I better leave it as is?

I'd leave it be. Not worth the hassle of trying something, not have it work and in the end, ruin your coin.

From what I can see, that fingerprint looks like it's on the inside of the plastic and not the coin itself. Maybe (possibly?) the oils from that fingerprint initiated that hazing? Frankly I don't know. I'm sure the more knowledgeable folks will chime in and offer opinions.....:smile

Thanks Greenie. I am within the time limit to return the proofs and that is what I am doing. The other proof cents have smudges and swipes and marks on them too. zeke
