I have these two Nickels . Two 1964 Nickels in Mint State and Proof Condition. Which do you prefer based on the photo's .
I sympathize with that. When I was first collecting, it seemed like half the nickels I looked at were 1964-D.
That's because they minted nearly 1.8 billion of them. I believe it is the highest nickel mintage ever.
I can’t compare a proof to a business strike for which is better? I like both of them for what they are. The business strike appears to be a nice one.
It's too bad that both are not business strike or proof. This comparison just indicates whether or not you like the shininess of a proof or the crispness of a good business strike.
Always an MS over a Proof in my rule book, for me, etc., all other things being equal. I'm sure there may be an exception here/there to the rule, but generally speaking...plus many good MS coins are of higher value than their proof counterparts.
I was given a bag full of nickels (probably about 100+) and the greater majority of them were 1964 and 1964 D. I wondered why the original owner had an obsession with that date. Is there something special about that 1964 nickel that I couldn't find on the internet?
The best I can do piecing together the era is that there was a coin shortage growing and they produced an unusually high number of nickels that year. Everyone that just saved nickels then would have the same high ratio of 64s and well into the seventies or early 80s.
