Just to the best of your ability's, I think this could be educational, being that these quarters can be found in your pocket change. These all came from the same roll/register. If you want to join in the fun, just grade them in order IE 1423 1 being the best, or for some of the more experienced graders, they can give there opinions of grade and why. I will post my in hand grades and evaluations tomorrow. PS Each coin was taken under the same exact lighting and camera settings, and no post photo editing. Coin 1 Coin 2 Coin 3 Coin 4
Yeah, I know that these new low relief quarters are a different beast. And many won't want the challenge, but hey its a rainy couple of days so give it a shot for the fun.
Just a quick question on your poll question, are you trying to determine whether we think it would grade circulated? Certainly in a register it's in circulation and circulated, but if it doesn't show wear, how can it grade circulated? Does that make sense?
I thought of the same thing very confusing, circulated as in grade or as in being outside of the mint which is completely different.
Yeah. If it helps any, think of "Circulated" as a "term of art." It doesn't have the strict meaning, because, quite honestly, nobody the hell cares if it circulated. All anybody cares about is its state of preservation. "Circulated" is used because that's where wear typically occurs. ANA then describes this wear at different levels so we can determine how far away from MS, or when they were minted, the coins are. Does that hold you any? If it's not the best explanation, it's a good piece of it.
The Sheldon Scale grades a coin's condition. What actually happens to the coin is irrelevant. It's perfectly reasonable to find uncirculated coins in circulation. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" ...William Shakespeare
Well that would be most folks definition. But I was actually asking the members if just because a coin was found in circulation does that mean that they would or should grade AU or worse. PS, in hand these quarters do not show any evidence of being circulated.
I would grade these quarters with either 1 or 3 being the best, for me it is a tossup. Technically coin 3 has a few more luster breaks, but one has the stain/spot by Washington's eye. I might try some MS70 on it and see if it disappears. Then I would choose 4 and then 2. So, 1,3,4,2 is my best guess. I was wondering what @cladking had to say, these low relief Quarters are quite the pain to grade.
Well of course it shouldn't. Any beginner with a Red Book knows that. "Circulated" means circulation wear, and "Uncirculated" means no trace of wear.
What, no "double dyes?" What business do you have wasting our time if there are no "double dyes?" Get it together! You got four gems, there. Best I can call it. And not one "double dye" in the bunch, lol.
It's quite common to find quarters without wear here in Denver. Problem is most are beat up with bag marks or extremely weak struck. They tend to have quite a bit of unstruck planchet defects. Number one is one of the better ones I have found.
