Found this small coin (2.10 g, 18 mm) mixed in with a bag of Byzantine coppers. I can't make out much, but the cross looks vaguely Medieval to me. I can't read enough of the text to be sure of the orientation. Any advise as to roughly where and when it might be from would be welcomed. The price was low ($5) so I don't have much to lose. And here are the 4 Byzantine coppers I bought at the same time. I got the Sear book on Byzantine coins recently, but haven't really learned how to use it yet. So any advice as to where to get started on IDing these would also be appreciated.
Here is an introduction to Byzantine copper coins: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/Byz/ You will find most of your types there.
Can't help with the medieval but those Byzantines are fairly easy. Top is Justin II and Sophia, next over is Justinian Bottom left is a bit rough, bottom right looks to probably be a Heraclius overstruck on a follis of Phocas.
Above coin is probably this (which is not my coin...) Medieval Armenia: Levon III (1301-1307) AE Kardez Obv: +ԼԵՒՈՆ ԹԱԳԱՒՈՐ (Levon King); King seated in oriental fashion. Clockwise legend Rev: +ԼԵՒՈՆ ԹԱԳԱՒՈՐ (Levon King); Cross with four lines in the quadrants. Clockwise legend.
Thanks! Looks good to me. I've rotated the original coin images and put them to a single image for comparison. I think the small cross goes at the 12:00 position on the reverse. Can't make out much of the lettering.
