I'm about halfway through one roll, and so far have found three of these.

It looks like a die gouge to me.

Wow. Just finished up that roll and pulled eight of these out. Not only that, but I have gone through two rolls so far from the same source and probably 90% had cracks, gouges, and chips on them. Is this typical for the 1960-D small date, or did I come across someone's hoard?

Just looked through the 3rd roll, and 37 out of 50 were either filled 'r' in liberty or filled 9 in the date. Of the remaining 13 coins, they are two different varieties with common die marks. Can't find exactly what it is about them though.

The die gouge is interesting. Other things like die chips are extremely common on cents of the late fifties and early sixties. One of the reasons that they created the large date dies was because of the numerous chips that were happening as a result of the lettering and numerals on the small date dies.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Thanks Bill! Of the four rolls I went through, I would say they were all from about 5 different dies which I thought was interesting. I got so familiar with the die markers that I could tell immediately which die chip/gouge the coin was going to be.
