Some members seem to get a tingle when they want and get attention, and this is true for all the various forums. Moderators realize that ancient coins reflect a different time and different interpersonal relationships, so this can tend to increase 'one-upness' of members as a sequence of postings reaches an end point, where the axe must fall. It helps when some call out to other members to cease, but it seems it sometimes goes the other way. Jim

Was it you who deleted the thread Jim?

The original post was cogent and important and most of the responses were calm and on topic. It would've been simple to remove certain less appropriate posts and lock the thread, rather than taking a chainsaw to a mosquito bite.

Speaking only for myself obviously, I have no tolerance for this sort of heavy-handed and anonymous moderation, so I guess it's once again time for me to step away from posting on this board for an extended period.

Is there a policy about removing individual posts as opposed to shutting down the entire thread?

I'll reply in this thread as a courtesy, although I am going to step away from posting to this group in general. As far as I can see, there is no clearly stated and consistent policy about what is or isn't acceptable here, nor any consistency in the way violations are dealt with. Certainly there have been episodes where particular posts were removed while the overall thread was allowed to stand. It seems to distill down to moderator whim, filtered through ill-described lenses of "community standards" and "I know it when I see it." That's not an environment I'm personally comfortable with.

This is probably far too political for a coin thread but here it goes anyway. There’s a definite far-right element that feels emboldened posting online lately no matter the topic. If mods only deleted those comments it would give into these peoples general feelings of persecution. These people are already pretty darn snowflakey and targeting them specifically would only make matters worse. By deleting an entire thread, the far-right wingers can perhaps fool themselves into believing it was taken down because of the “woke/liberal” people; if those people didn’t exist, they’d be able to keep talking how they used to in “the good old days”. If I was a mod I know I’d also just take down the entire thread too. It’s a win-win. The left side of the thread will just shrug, move on and get back to talking about coins and the far-right side won’t go ballistic and likely further harass the forum and even mods directly since they weren’t discretely targeted.

Just my 2¢ as someone who spends an embarrassingly large amount of time perusing social media.

I think the best thing to do in the future is to try and ignore the trolls.

I'm sure the mods don't want to read and delete threads. But if they don't, the whole argument could continue and people might get really angry. On the other hand deleting threads or posts might upset people. It's a no win situation.

The only person who wins, is maybe the troll.

Predictability of enforcement encourages rule breakers to feel out just how much they can get away with.

I think it’s better that members simply know the rules than know the penalty too.

Would it be off-topic to discuss Frank S Robinson in this thread?

    I'm confused.

I would certainly hope that it's OK to say if he removed the "joke," and responded to the complaint. It would be difficult to argue that there was anything improper about the thread as long as it was limited to that subject. before someone came along and tried to make it about What's Wrong With Our Country.

While the purpose of CT ancients is to share our love of ancients, and to share knowledge and the coins from our collections, such a forum is open to issues that deviate from the original intent, which, especially in these times, is inevitable.

Subjects of a political nature, as well as subjects of social import are a natural outgrowth of our activities when we search auction catalogs, view articles or engage in social media. You view an auction online, looking a lot descriptions, and then, there it is, the off-color remark. You react and create a thread, which is natural and totally within your rights. There are posts, most of a constructive nature, but others designed to provoke. That's when things can spin out of control.

People do have the right to post comments, no matter how corrosive and mendacious they may be, but I think there is a point in the discussion that the atmosphere becomes so toxic, that something needs to be done, in this case taking down the entire thread. As much as I hate seeing this done, I do see the need for such action.

With the shootings in San Jose, the decline of consensu

This is sad, very sad. I'm really afraid that our polarized society, and our democracy, is unraveling, which puts me in a dark place right now.

@furryfrog02 - I like and respect you - but come on... Frank makes a lot of jokes when he describes coins... I find myself actually reading every coin description at every auction he releases... its unique and mostly very funny. Some fall flat (to me anyway) - some are absolute classics.

I read descriptions of coins I have no intent on ever bidding on. .. just for the enjoyment of his wit.

A couple of examples (the coins I show are not the ones at his auction - but the same types - for reference. First is mine.. second is not):
    upload_2021-5-30_0-48-7.png
    M. Sergius Silus denarius as "Robert Mueller, helmeted, on horseback l., holding up sword and severed head of [you can imagine the rest]"

    Next example:
    upload_2021-5-30_0-43-32.png
    ------
He's great.... it goes on and on...
The particular coin discussed in the original thread (satyr) has always been a target of his... previously mentioning a Clinton/Lewinsky connection and many other forms of sexual innuendo. He does it ALL the time with that coin - why? Why not ? - its a tough coin to describe generally - so some humor is pretty cool... if he crossed your personal line - ok! Of course it will offend someone!! Apparently we are a very fragile people!!
If you are offended then scroll on or don't bid. This is the proper response - not an attempt to make it a public issue. He will not change and nor should he. Its his business and he can conduct it as he likes... he is not breaking any laws...cool thing about being old - you can be cancelled and not even care (or not even know for that matter). He is a good, fair and respected person - anyone who states otherwise is just jumping on a soap box. As far as #MeToo goes.. I have a daughter entering Law School and another going into Nursing .. they don't require coin descriptions to fit their life view. Its just noise to them.. they have bigger targets in their sites....
Probably won't get many likes for this post - but that's what usually happens when you just state the facts as you know 'em without worrying about the new popular opinion... all good.

I said it before and I will say it again; jokes about rape and sexual assault have no place anywhere.
I've been in the military for almost 20 years and have been around quite a bit of crude humor. Never though, has that particular topic been "funny".
Most of the time, I have read his comments and laughed. This time, not so much. I let him know my, and several other people here on the forum's, opinion on the matter. Hopefully he will think a bit more before putting his words on paper (or screen as it may be)

On a separate note, kudos to your daughters. They are edited and taking names. I hope my daughter grows up to do the same.

That’s the thing - he didn’t joke about rape… You deduced that… and created a thread about it.maybe scroll by the listing, shake your head and don’t deal with him anymore or send him a private note asking for clarification of his comments. He did not use the word “rape” - that is your interpretation of his intentions.. which are his own (if that is still allowed).

It sure seemed an awful lot like a joke about rape. To me and others.
Also, I didn't create the thread. Someone else did. Again, reinforcing the fact that it wasn't just me who read his comments and took them in a certain light.
Either way, what's done is done.
