Okay, I am a rookie to be sure, but for some reason, I am drawn to error coins... I just love finding a coin that has a problem... Now, I would like to find one of the rare double die errors or some such thing, but I also like to add to my collection of 'lesser' errors... Like these three that I found in my last two rounds of rolls i searched... What are your opinions on the three types of problems shown here?.. And do you guys even bother to keep such?.. I don't care about value... The value it has is only what I choose to place on it... ... B
Others would know more about errors than me. Number 2 looks like it could be post mint. What I can help you with is some simple tips on shooting coins. Set the camera to the macro setting, either use a tripod or rest the camera flat on something to avoid any shake. Turn off the flash and play with different lightings for different coins. Once you have nice clear shots crop out the rest of the photo. Photoscape is free and easy to use editing software and is has the round crop that works great for coins. http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php
I should mention the one I like is Picasa from google. Don't know anything about the other downloads on that site.
#1 is is caused by gas under the copper plating. Although it is unusual to see in a line that goes all the way across the coin it is not considered an error coin "2 is post mint damage #3 is called a cud. It is caused by a broken die and is an error. That one is a nice one. Nice find. Richard
Well, I think I had a pretty good handle on what the three were... More interested if any of you either bother to keep them... I do personally, but I find I am stacking up more and more coins and I think I will have to start paring back on what I keep for myself... The blistering is what I figured that to be after I got it under my microscope... I was disappointed that it wasn't a die crack, but the blister going the full width of the coin and right through the neck seemed symbolic somehow and was a keeper for me in any case... As for the after mint damage, I will have to get you a better picture... It is the second one I have found that way with virtually the same pattern, and in looking closely, I think you will find it was done in such a way that prevented the design from being pressed fully... I do believe it was done at the mint... I might try a closer image... Thanks for the tip on photo editing... I will try and remember to crop... Unfortunately that is the macro setting you are seeing in those pics... That is as close up as I can get and still get the focus... it is really not a good camera... Yeah, the nickel is sweet... The back is more impressive than the front... Looks like octopus tentacles coming over and around the building... Was too beat to do anymore pics last night... will try again later...
