I have a question about mint mark placement. Is unusual position considered a variety? Can't seem to find much in google except of course the usual ebay pics. I have a Denver mint mark that's awful close and am curious if placement is tracked or even cared about. And if so, does this seem unusually close or within tolerance? Thanks for any opinions
Remember mint marks were still hand punch into the die around that time so they can be all over in that area and yours is still quite normal.
Ah, ok. Good point. So I imagine it's probably only interesting if it's sideways or above the date or something.

Mint marks were hand stamped onto the coin at that time. Looks like yours was done by a newbie at the mint.
As stated, mint marks were hand punched until 1989. There can be a premium for unusually misplaced mint marks. The 1975 high D Jefferson nickel comes to mind.
