Oh, that's a fun way to do it. I'm really wanting to start a nice graded US Type Set but I have been hesitant to start as I know it's something I can never complete. You would think I would just do what I can...but completing a "set" is important to me.
Ever since I sold my full Morgan set, and sold off my AU 1893s, I have cared less about complete sets. Now, I tend to buy what I like. The idea of “first year, and last year” of a particular series became very appealing to me. In addition, it gives me the freedom to buy high grade coins, and not to have to worry about key dates. It has been lots of fun doing that; in addition, I have expanded into World coins, particularly large Silver ones. I call it the “my way” type set.
I just need to get over it. I should just do what do you...buy what I like and not worry about it. I do NEED to do a complete Morgan set. That's probably my #1 US Goal. LOL.
I did the full set twice—once with an XF 40 1893s, and the second time with an AU 50 1893s, and an AU 53 1889cc. Yes, it was very rewarding. The problem is, do you include the 1895 proof, and what about PL and DMPL coins? There are so many varieties that you have to decide whether or not to include them, or do basic circulation strikes. Glad that I don’t have that problem anymore—I grab up good looking Morgans, mostly PL and DMPL ones now.
With the Morgan set...I've decided that just a Date/MM of business strikes is a "complete set." I know there was allegedly 12,000 1895 business strikes produced...but none have ever been seen. So, I consider that a proof only issue. The only variety I would probably include would be the 8TF coins from 1878. I know it's dumb...but I'm a stubborn person. For some reason, I am OK with that as a complete set.
I fully agree and am in the same boat. I would love the idea of the Type set, but knowing there will be holes might just detour me away from the prospect. Plus, I like looking at my completed set. Represents a journey of sorts of what I learned and sought for. To each their own though. Got to admit @Morgandude11 is acquiring some very nice examples!
Hey, you are a stubborn person who is right. You gave me great advice about my wife’s Molar implant. She found a periodontal surgeon who did the implant, and a reconstructive dentist who did the post and crown. They agreed with your take on it 100%. My insurance covered all but $500 of the procedure. It was finished 3 weeks ago.
Yes. The implant went in during December. The crown and post was in late April. Gave it 4 months to set in the bone. You were a big help with advice.
Regardless of the ultimate "reveal," I find this opportunity to contrast two noticeably different (to me, at least) but identically graded specimens a rare learning/confusing opportunity. Thank you for sharing!
These drills are done here for a good reason. To show how subjective coin grading is, and to educate the collector as to the importance of you learning how to grade for your own benefit. You are the "CAC" in the determination of how well and what you think the true grade and value of your subject really is, and, to the best of your interest and ability.
I know that NGC gave them the same grade, but my belief is that the first is MS65, the second MS66 FB.
