Hoping that you knowledgeable folks can help me decide whether this 1942-S Merc dime has an inverted "S" mint mark. I've read some of the older postings on CoinTalk on this, but even after reading them, I'm not sure I understood the serif vs non-serif distinction in gauging whether the mint mark is an inverted "S". Photos below. Dummy me sent the coin in to NGC, who, of course, wouldn't give a variety attribution for it because NGC only recognizes DDO, DDR, RPM, RPD, or MPD varieties (they at least graded it as MS-65). I should have sent it to PCGS or ANACS, and may do so, if I think it is an inverted "S" based on feedback from you all. Thanks very much in advance for your guidance and postings.
Looks like a normal trumpet tail for a 1942 S http://varietyvista.com/06 Mercury Dime/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm
Thanks for the link to the website (saved that link for future reference). I think you're right. My eyes are getting bad. I can more clearly see it is the trumpet tail version (my initial look thought there was a serif flare to it, but when comparing to the photo at the website you provided, it's a trumpet tail). Oh well, looks like I paid for NGC to grade/slab an ordinary 1942-S Merc dime, lol. At least I won't make that mistake again sending it to PCGS or ANACS. Many thanks again.
