Ok Cointalk, what would you all do with this coin? It is my only Lib with a date 1850-1876 and my only Lib that I consider "damaged" with an edge ding. I buy near spot price ungraded BU pre33 gold for bullion value. This was the only pre1876 Lib I had seen in my LCS, so I bought it at spot to have a pre1876. After I got home the flat spot started to bother me. If all Libs you have are BU, but this is your only pre1876, what would you do?
That's damage I could probably live with on a type coin. In this specific context, I don't know how much of an edge ding @dcarr's restriking process would be able to consume. If I were thinking of sending him this one, I'd probably contact him first for his opinion. I'd be reluctant to obliterate a coin for damage that insignificant, but there are plenty of other people who would melt better coins without a second thought.
I wouldnt have any issue using that one if you want the carr one, it's just a question of what you would enjoy more that or the carr
I hope you can share the end result. I will be interested to see how much the look of the coin determines the look after restrike. Good luck.
I have about a month to track down two fairly priced Liberty DE's. If I am successful they will be off to DC.
Its the (Type-1 and Type-2, circa 1850-1876) that are hard to find. Can't wait to see mine, hopefully next week.
It will probably be a Type 2. I have emails out to two of the dealers I buy from. I also have one show coming. When a dealer asks what I am looking for, it will be fun to say a cleaned Liberty DE as close to melt as possible. You are the second person (or maybe the same person) that I know of with these coming back to them soon. I have exchanged messages with that person on another site.
Presenting 1848 CAL. (fka 1871-S) I would say its a solid 9/10 meeting my expectations. The color in hand surprised me at first, when I showed my coin shop they thought it was a copper replica. I will try to post some different lighting pics this weekend so you can see the faint original strike in some parts.
The edge ding is gone! The only old damage still visible is a vertical scratch on her neck, under her jawline. Very faint but in hand you can make it out.
@GoOoldmember That looks really nice. I am working to obtain a Ty 2 and Ty 3 Liberty so that I can send them in. I was afraid I would not like the "Satin" finish but your strike appears to have some luster. I really wish he was doing BU or Proof. How much of the original color of the coin came through in the end. Thanks for sharing.
I had same feeling about the satin. Now that I see it I believe the satin finish is to hide previous blemishes easier. If it was a proof restrike I'm sure you would need a better coin than I had, which most wouldn't send due to value. It does have luster, just a bit subdued. Color wise, it doesnt have any of the 150yr old original color. You might think Im exaggerating but it looked like a copper coin, or BRIGHT rose gold when I first opened it. Guessing it must be cleaned before being restruck. I have it sitting out in the open air and I feel like it is starting to look more "gold".
