Going through $1 World Coin Bargain Bins for Silver Content Ones Anyone have luck doing this? I just went to a stamp show today with ONE coin dealer, yeah, i know, and i went through his 10 world coins for $2 junk.. I didn't find any 40% or 90% silver content coins but I still made the attempt to look anyway.. Anyone have luck with these and finding silver content coins in the bunch?
Most dealers know what's silver, but it's still super easy to get world coins for well under spot in the U.S. 1940s Australian coins (mainly 3d and 6d) are super cheap. Sometimes you can get them for about $7-8 per ozt.
My dealer has 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1, $2, and I think a $5 bins to search through. So far, the 10¢ bin has actually has the best variety of coins in it, and I've found an AG Barber dime and a holed silver Canadian dime from the 30s.
I think when silver first cleared $13 an ounce a couple of years back that suddenly there were many scavengers looking for foreign silver on the cheap. There are not likely as many tales of $10 silver coins in the 3/$1 bins as there used to be. It's sort of like at the birth of eBay. You'd hear tales of people making thousands of dollars going to yard sales. Now you hear about someone having a yardsale at 9 am on Saturday and a dozen eBay/craigslist dealers showing up at 7:30 to get first dibs.
You are more likely to find silver coins, both World and US, in the CoinStar reject bin at your local supermarket. The price is very reasonable...
