Exactly... I'll be sure to let you know who I buy from on ebay too :)

I think the only time it is appropriate to comment on a coin that is currently being offered in an auction is if you have a very good reason to think the coin in question is a fake or if there is some reason to think the description is not correct. That would be doing a service to other bidders. I have questioned the authenticity of some coins offered in auctions, and the coins have subsequently been withdrawn. Other bidders who were not aware of a problem coin were saved the error of their bidding.

I don’t think the people driving these coins up to ridiculous prices are coming onto CT. Probably just investors looking to make $$$, not hobbyists.

I think it's kosher to discuss auction prices after the fact, not so before hammer time.

I don’t believe they are looking to make money. I believe they are looking for wealth protection.

I’ll add that I agree with Victor, Orfew and others that it’s bad style to post an auction on a db before it’s finished. We hobbyists are small fish in a big pond, and the only way to reach new collecting goals for some of us, is to come across the odd auction deal.

[Editing] I agree, although where people get this idea of using ancient coins for wealth protection is a bit puzzling. Over time coin prices have been pretty stable. And barring this last years run up and even then it’s only for specific coins, coin prices have not outpaced even a simple S&P or Dow ETF, so better to just put ones money in there. There seems to be, in recent history at least, a correlation between the person in the White House and a certain group of people thinking that fiat money will tank and so silver/gold is a must have. Gives me a harty chuckle. But I don’t want to get too political.

That being said… Somehow by the grace of the gods I won one out of four coins despite deciding not to wake up at 4am for the conclusion. Looking forward to posting it on one of @Roman Collector Faustina Friday’s! Though it’s almost a curse now to have to pay shipping just for a single Denarius :inpain:

Interestingly… all the coins I bid on, and a good number I was watching (Flavian through Antonine) all got won by a bidder(s) submitting the winning bid precisely 2 seconds before close. I have a feeling someone scooped up a good number of coins all at once playing the sniping game. Always fun noticing these patterns.

On three of the five I won the price was determined in the last 5 seconds.

3 of 4 coins that I bought went right up to my max bid in the last second! In fact, on two of the coins I bid an odd amount, like 321CHF, and I inserted that amount 2 seconds before closing and then came a bid of exactly 320CHF at the closing second which pushed me to the max. That happend in the same fashion on two coins. Either I am a genius sniper or there is something rotten in the the state of Switzerland.

Congrats on the wins! I put in my 4 pre-bids all using this same logic. Lost 3. Almost wonder if it’s a bad strategy now for pre-bids. If someone bidding against you sees that odd number, it’s an indicator to the other person they’ve reached the max and will likely win the coin with just one more bid. This may only matter for me with Leu since as an EST person I chose not to wake up at 5:30-6am so I had to do pre bids at midnight EST. Dumb decision on my part. Probably coulda won more if I did wake up since I lost by only one increment on those 3  But for the live last few second countdown yea definitely the right call to bid a few bucks more than the next increment.

Leu is on Byzantines right now. I'm sitting out today as I already have spent a bit more than I wanted to.

I won the only coin I was interested in...my first leu win after many previous losses. Like everyone else, my bid shot up to my max right before closing. I entered my bid a little under 5 seconds before the lot closed. My bid was well above the current bid, approximately double. Initially it only went up a few increments, but then right at the one second mark it went to my absolute max. Luckily for me it didn’t go higher, but for a few seconds I thought I was actually going to win something for a decent price. :hilarious:

I bid on four items. Lost on all four.

I bid on 10 items and lost all of them. All but two were Alexandrian coins. Out of the Alexandrian coins, there were 2 that I really wanted and submitted what I thought were very strong bids. In the end, I didn't win a single lot.

Someone with deep pockets wanted a lot of coins from this auction. Leu always has strong results, but I've won my fair share of coins from there. In the past, I would have expected to walk away with something after bidding on that many items.

I won 0,23 grams of Lycian silver the day before yesterday.

    How's that for a weekend's effort!:)

I lost both Faustina coins I bid on and I considered my bids competitive.

One out of eight. I bid a small amount, just as a placeholder for the live bidding but at the time of live bidding I was out of connection. Really surprised I got that one with that low bid, it was roughly half of what I expected it to sell for. The other seven lots hammered for twice and more of my bids, which was totally expected.

I bought one coin from Leu this time around. I had several others on my watchlist, but all went higher than I felt comfortable bidding.

I am in the same situation as several of you. I won one coin, but only one, and I noticed a lot of last-second snipe bids. The good thing is the coin will be one of the best pieces in my collection.

Me too. Lots of snipes. I bid 240 Chf for an Antoninus Pius drachm of the zodiac series, it went for 6x the asking price or 1200 Chf. Since I didn't get up at 5am I lost out.
