I have 2 1962, and 2 1963 Franklin Halves they are all MS-66 FBL by Gallery Coin Company and pcgs says they are worth 25k a piece, but the redbook only goes up to MS-65 and is really low. Coin world has a value for the ones that do not have the full bell lines but my coins do have the full bell lines. They value at 900 for the 62's, and 500 for the 63's. I'm really confused can anyone please tell me who is right? I of course want to sell them for the $25k each but I really don't think that's reasonable, is it? Does anyone have a dealer's book that will tell me what amount I can sell these for?
The best thing to do is to look on Ebay and find out what other people that are looking for those coins are buying them for. That will give you a fair idea of their current market value.
Howdy janlwp - Welcome to the Forum !! You got a couple of problems here - first of all the PCGS price guide and the values quoted in the Red Book are both grossly inaccurate. Second problem is the Gallery Coin Company vastly overgrades coins. So in all likelyhood the coins you have slabbed by them are not MS66 and likely not FBL either. If you want to find out accurate values for a given coin in a given grade your best bet is to check the realized auction prices on various auction web sites. If you want to buy only accurately graded slabbed coins or at least close to accurately graded slabbed coins then you need to buy them graded by NGC, PCGS, ANACS or ICG. But ICG often overgrades modern coins as well if they are in the ultra high grades.
Thanks ajm229 but.. I bought these off of eBay! I was hoping to find a market that is a bit more exclusive, and willing to pay more.
No such market exist. I mean no disrespect, but if you didn't already know that, then you likely paid too much for the coins as well. If you can post good quality pics here - I'm sure we can give you an idea of the accurate grade and value for the coins.
Dear gdjmsp thanks for the advise My husband and I looked over a coin and it may be a 65 because of a blemish right behind the eye (looks like a grip mark), and it looks like a soft strike on the back, but I am told that that is common with the 1963's. I did count the bell lines and all 7 are there though. I called a coin shop and they said exactly what you did about the grading companies, (hindsight being 20/20), except that they use a dealer book for values. I can still return these coins, or sell them myself for what I paid for them, but I was hoping to get much more.
That is highly unlikely. But don't feel too bad, you're certainly not the first to mistakenly think that. Re: the FBL - in order for a coin to qualify as FBL there is more to it than the 7 lines just being there. They are there on every uncirculated coin. But none of the lines can be broken by a ding, bag mark or weak strike in order for them to qualify as FBL.
now I've got my magnifing glass out On careful inspection there are no dings or breaks in the bell lines, above it to the left of the crack in the bell there is a scrach in the finish that looks like an E. I think that it came from the same grabber that got the front mark.
I wish the best for you, but I wouldn't hold out any high hopes if I were you. Post the pics if you can.
Hey gdjmsp I just checked eBay Hi Again, I just checked eBay and a coin exactly (same grading co., same ms rating) like mine was going for 212.00, and it has several days to go yet. These coins may not be worth much but they have gone up 5X since I bought them last month! I'm hanging on to them for a while now! I'm still interested in finding the right price, but that seems to be changing.
