I totally forgot a CotM thread for April. April was a great month. I obtained a whole bunch of coins, and it was a touch decision. I arrived at this glorious AE of a young Caracalla from Roma with a rather architecturally interesting reverse. I liked it so much I even posted a thread, here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roma-win-2-dinosaurians.379752/ What was your favorite coin from April?
Lovely coin! ... I have slowed down my purchasing generally due to the high prices out there. But did pick up these two coins of Julian II from Aegean Numismatics back in April. $100 for the pair - which I thought was fair. The Votive has a beautiful portrait and the Bull is such an important coin - and @ 29mm is very impressive in hand. Been on my want list for a very long time .. so really nice additions to my collection.
I bought a few I really like, but I'd have to say the goat biga is my favorite! C. Renius, 138 BC. Roman AR denarius, 3.84 g, 16.3 mm, 1 h. Rome, 138 BC. Obv: Helmeted head of Roma, right; X behind. Rev: Juno in a biga of goats, right, wearing diadem and holding scepter and reins in left hand and whip in right hand; C·RENI below; ROMA in exergue. Refs: Crawford (RRC) 231/1; RSC Renia 1; Sydenham (CRR) 432; Sear (RCV) 108.
I only bought a single ancient coin during April, a silvered follis of Licinius I from Nicomedia. Licinius I A.D. 311-313 Obverse: IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG; laureate head right. Reverse: GENIO AVGVSTI; Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over l. shoulder, r. holding patera, l. cornucopiae; to l. altar; Δ in right field. In exergue SMN Diameter: 21x22mm Weight 4.8g RIC VI Nicomedia 71a
April was a good month. The coin I like the most is Julia Domna (wife of S. Severus) AR Denarius. Rome, AD 193-196. draped bust right Rev: Venus, seen from behind standing right, leaning on column, half nude with drapery hanging low beneath her posterior, holding palm branch and apple. RIC 536 (Severus) 2.16 gr. 17 mm
I bought this in late March, but I'm counting it as April as I added it to Tantalus in April. The main reason I'm sticking it as a highlight of the month is its long provenance. Denarius of L. My favorite addition in april is this Tiberius AS, beeing my first coin from the reign of Tiberius and my first coins with the ROM ET AVG reverse:
