Well I finished it. The coins from my year of birth. Nothing special, AU's and some BU's. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to get 'decent' unslabbed coins from 1943. In any case I'm now trying to figure out my next project.
I like your display; impressive. I had a similar project; I purchased a proof set of coins for each of my seven grandchildren for their birth years in silver. Most of them are too young right now to appreciate them, but as they grow up, they might be glad to have them.
I've put together a PCGS set of birth year coins from the Omaha Bank Hoard. What I'm trying to do is to put together a year set for my younger son that are 100 years before his (1988) birth. So far, I've got 1¢, 5 ¢, 50¢ & $1 along with a 1788 New Jersey copper. It's a lot easier (and cheaper) for those of you with children/grandchildren born in the 21st century Bob
I'm doing a similar thing with 100 years before my birth, but I'm doing world coins. I'm only having a little luck with it though...
a hundred years before my birth...1865...now that would be impressive. Congrats..it looks great! MIchelle
1909 is definitely a tough set, and I definitely don't put my 1909 set up on my wall Very cool display though, now on to the next project!!!!
Art, I am assuming you are talking about the display and not the coins. I bought the frames from APMEX on sale. They have a cutout for a picture but I used it to show year and mint. Bought a piece of red oak from Home Depot. Stained it, put in a grommet, and screwed the frames onto it. Total cost about $25.00. Coins were a little harder. Coin shops and Ebay, mostly BIN and best offer, only a few auctions. I probably overpaid but the idea was to get a failrly nice display, not a bargain. I will say it was a fun project. I only wish I could have gotten a little better 43S quarter. That seemed like the hard one. I also think that these are some of the nicest design coins: the eagle on the back of the half is one of the best eagle depictions and my favorite coin is the Mercury dime. IMHO of course.
You're not finished, you've just begun. You've only finished one country. Birthyear sets for all the countries of the world are somewhat popular among world coin collectors. I know several people who have built such sets.
