Hi, I'm new to coin collecting and really enjoy the hobby. I also like to metal detect. I have a few questions. I bought a coin collection at a tag sale that contained all the mints (P,D,S) coins from 1948 to 1955. The coins were loose and not in the cardboard sleeves. I believe the coins were from mint sets and were removed from their sleeves. Some of the silver coins have deep toning and all the coins are in nice condition. Very nice rainbow effect. Is there any way to tell if they were from mint sets? Also, do the coins still retain value if they were removed from their sleeves? Thanks, Steve
Howdy 49ers and Welcome to the Forum !! Yes, still retain some value. But value is largely dependant on the condition of the coin. You say the coins are loose, it would be a good idea to not let the coins bang together or rub against anything, epsecially your fingers. They need to be stored and holdered properly. And do not attempt to clean them in any way. To find the value of any individual coin post pictures and we will try and help.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Once a coin is out of the original container it was issued in a lot of the value is lost. If you've ever seen those Hot Wheel or MatchBox cars for sale you would see the same thing. If in the original box, usually about double the cost. If you ever watch the Antique Road Show on TV you would hear many times about a toy or item that is worth so much more since it is still in the original box or container. There are auto collectors that purchase a car, have it towed to thier house and never even start it. Supposedly that too makes it worth more. In other words your coins are still worth more than just coins but have lost a great deal of value by being removed from the original container. As noted also, the condition of any coin also is a major factor in it's value. Unfortunately also, there are many people that simply put together such sets from coins from circulation and call them Mint Sets. Due to the age of the ones you have, that is not likely but still is possible if a person had many rolls of those from way back when.
