Hey gang! I bought this is a large group of half dollars yesterday. I have been able to identify all of them (there were 30 or so) except this one. It appears to me to be obverse #1 At first I thought it was O-101... but I see no recutting at the bottom of the "U" and and alignment of the "T" and the "I" are not correct. Also no sign of the die line into the right wing. As I spent more time looking I am unable to find any die pair out of all the ones in my overton book that have the alignment in the "T" and "I" that this piece does... Note the broken bottom on the "T" and how the "I" is centered directly under the left side of the "T" It's definitely a genuine piece. Maybe I'm just missing something.... anyone??
Phew, now this is tough. I believe that it is O-107. An R-3. The diagnostics: obv: seem to match. Rev: The area to the left of the C (in cents) matches as a die defect . Let me know what you think.
It's very close. The pic of the 107 I have The I looks to be slightly more centered into the T... it could by my eyes playing tricks... like I have said I have done more then 30 of these today... hahaha...
I'm coming up with 109. It cant be Rev F (O-107) because on Rev F the stem extends past the center of the C in 50 C. One thing I keyed on was the end of the feather over the 5. It is just about over the center of the 5 and that eliminates just about everything. Rev C and E also match the feather position but on C again the stem reaches the center of the C, and on E it extends past the center of the C.
okay, the U in United is closed at the top. So, I'll would agree with O-109 but-- no letters showing in MERI, however, this (O-109a) may only be the later die state. hmmmmmmmmmm....
I think O-109 also - but the O-109 does not mention the letters in MERI. This appears in the O-109A with the die crack. So wouldn't this technically be a earlier die state where the crack has not yet developed? Also before what ever cause the other letters appearing within MERI????? Just curious on the die state. I could see where the die could have wore down losing the letters in MERI, or they reworked the die to clean-up the letters in MERI; but not the die crack.
