In preparation for tommorrow's 5PM deadline for the 2009 NGC registry set awards, I was searching through previous winners. When I saw that a fellow member of the registry won 3rd place for his Jefferson Nickel set in the BEST PRESENTED category in 2003, I had to look. Imagine my surprise when I found two different coins that I presently own in his collection. How do I know, check out the photos on his 1941 & 1941-D. The photos are mine.

Here are my photos as seen in his registry set:

The best part is that NGC's photo files are updated once per day. I just went into my coin list and changed the photos for the 1941-D to this:

Sometime during the next 24 hours, we should see the photo in Hoot's 2003 registry set change from my old photo to my new photo. That brings me to my next point. The old photo is from June 2008. My photos have gotten much better over the last year. I credit Mark Goodman.:D

I wonder if he has seen it? Maybe I should contact him. What do you guys think?

My Bad...I read it as he had taken your images and said he had the coins in his collection when he did not...

    Rickie,

I can't tell if you are joking or not. He is not a thief. This is his registry set from the year 2003. The NGC registry photos are linked to the certification number. When a coin changes owners, the old user's photo will show in the new user's set until they change it. In this case, two of this guy's coins now belong to me. Once I bought them, I changed the photos. As a result, when you view his award winning set which is posted on the registry forum, the current photo (mine) attached to that certification number appears.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear with my original post. I just thought it was cool that I can make an old award winning set look better with my photos.

    THat's cool!

IIRC, Hoot is not as active any more in collecting. Last I heard, he was in med school....Mike

That is pretty sweet Lehigh! Lovin' the coins, and the story is pretty cool too! Nice to see that you have some "famous" coins... :D lol

One problem with that theory - NGC registry will only allow each individual coin to be owned by one person at a time. When I buy a coin that another has not removed from his collection, I cannot enter it into my collection until the other has released it. I have been there and done that. The coin will go in limbo for my collection until I get a memo from NGC stating that the other person has released the coin.

That is true, but once the coin enters your collection, you inherit the previous owners photo and description. I can prove this! Take a look at the description of the 1951 Jefferson Nickel that I purchased last month. I have not changed the description yet. Now you guys know my cataloging obsession, does that description sound like something I would write.

Read it now, I will be changing it by 3PM tomorrow for the NGC 2009 registry awards deadline.

I see now. He no longer owns that set. That is just an historical record of his set from 2003. Then, yes, your photo's follow the certification number.

Just looked at the 51. MS67? Wow... If that coin looks like the picture I would say. Jesus take the wheel, somebody driving is asleep. The first thing that caught my eye on that coin is all the chatter in the center of the reverse.

    Maybe its just me...

I see nothing from the Lehigh Photos that suggest there are any major disturbances which would demand a lessor grade. Nice Coin Paul.

Lehigh... yep I read it wrong! I was under the impression that this guy took your images and said he had the coin when he did not...LOL

    My apologies to all.

Hey Lehigh, that description might be better than one you'd write!!!!

Interesting. I admit that I was confused when I first read the beginning of this thread. The coins are beauties and your photography is great. I'm really surprised that NGC doesn't have a way to freeze the images of the "historic" collections rather than having them updated as the coins move on to new owners and sets.

Nah, I like the long version with flowery prose. Here is the updated description.

    Owner's Description:

A supremely lustrous coin with an excellent strike for the date/mm despite the mushy steps. This is one of those coins where the obverse carried the grade. A no brainer MS67 obverse combined with an MS65/66 reverse. Regardless of the grading generosity, this coin does not fall short in the eye appeal category.

On second thought, his might be better.:headbang:
