I totally agree with you when you say what is a collection when you cannot get to it when you want to..

I believe in a safe deposit box.

You asked about a dehumidifier for a safe.

I use boxes of silica gel from Brent Krueger, but you can probably get them elsewhere.

I like them because they have a built-in low-tech hygrometer in the bottom that changes color when they've absorbed too much water. Pop the cloth bag out of the box, toss it in the oven for a couple of hours, and it's ready to go again.

    Cheap, easy, and effective.

I picked up a nice antique floor safe in perfect working condition from Craigslist for under $200. Had to pick it up myself and boy it was heavy!!!

    safes & boxes

I have a safety deposit box and two safes at home, one large and one small. The smaller one is used as a transitional safe for things I remove from the safety deposit box, and is the highest rating safe we own. The larger safe is a large safe which holds newer coins which have not been processed and less valuable coins. The safety deposit holds the gold and higher value items.

My father on the other hand had seven safety deposit boxes scattered around three states (he lived in the NE corner of Oklahoma). He was worried about tornadoes and such and did not like having his collection in one place. Here in the Pacific Northwest, I worry about earthquakes and when the big one hits. So, I am slowly coming to his point of view.

    Storage Units for Coins

I have a storage unit where I put some of the bulky lower-value coins. There are high security units and low security ones. I saw in the contract, they didn't want anything of substantial value in any of their units. I ignored the contract, because I don't want to pay for a bank storage unit for bulky items.

A coin club member had a storage unit broken into. He had one box, securely duck taped up marked "junk". And another box with heavy objects and brick-a-brac inside marked "valuables". You guessed it, the thieves purloined the latter and left the former. But he had put the valuable silver coins in the box marked "junk", so he was home free.
