Well I am new to colecting paper currency. My father just recently gave me a currency book full of all kinds of various notes. I was told this was for Christmas this year and he wanted to pass it down. I have taken some pictures of some of the notes and I have several already in a photobucket but I turn to these boards(which I am new to) to ask for some advice could you tell me if I have some rarities or if everything is pretty common place.

Any help would be appreciated and i will leave the link to my photobucket if care to look at some of the others.

This is a 1914 $5 large note burke/glass sig. but the lable on the left says only 12 notes known and i am trying to figure out what makes it rare or if it even is.

Wow! Those are beauties! Yes, these are going to be worth some money. Some of the others can tell you what they are worth as I don't know.

However, can I implore you to get with your Dad and ask him the stories behind these notes. Maybe they came from your grandfather, or maybe he just bought them. But knowing the stories and the fact that these came from your Dad may be a lot more valuable than the market value attached to them. I inherited some paper (not as nice as yours) money and don't know the stories behind them and I wish I had the opportunity to ask.

    Great Notes!!
The $2 rainbow is a start too that's nice.
    And consecutive Black Eagles...

    All great keepers!
Don't know why that would say only 12 known but someone here will know if that is legit.

And from family...I"d keep them for sure.

    WOW what a Christmas Present!!

You should really enjoy going thru those for awhile.
Keep posting the pictures in here as you get them and you'll get lots of comments on what they are, about them and their value.

Ricky B might have some competition for a note collection but I doubt it :D

    Johnboy...
You should really thank your Dad!
He has given you a wonderful collection.

He must have been partial to Phillie as I see quite a few Phillie notes.

Some of the Large size notes like the $5 Educational Silver Cert is quite expensive even in Grades of VF. Most of the Large Size seem not to be graded and to determine condition I would try to get some more detailed images. They look great and you should buy 2 books.

schwartz/lindquist Small Size US Notes 9th Edition
Hessler/Chambliss Comprehensive Catalog of US Paper Money

He has given you quite a fine start, learn about them, even get them graded, the $2 Rainbow is a really special note in High Grade VF-30 to XF-45 that note will go 3-4K

The Battleship is a nice note as well..it looks XF to me maybe High XF

Post em when you get images, a scanner will be your best best..scan at 300 dpi and resize to 1000 x800 at 100 dpi and upload to photobucket and paste the image links..

    Regards,

    RickieB

    Type A note
The Burke/Glass signatures..I would have to look up the census on this note.

Pretty hard to come by and this note looks to be High XF to AU to me..pics are not to good but that's what I see..

    Sort of like this one...

Hey guys, I'm still learning and still a LOW intermediate when it comes to paper. So, please tell me which one is the "rainbow note" that several have posted about.

    Thanks.

The $2 in the third and fourth images: blue vertical stripe in the paper, green screen across the top of the note, red seal and serials. These 1869 U.S. Notes were nicknamed the "Rainbow" series because of the heavy use of color....

Incidentally, it's not a star note--the solid star is just the generic serial suffix character used on all notes of all denominations of this series. Many of the large-size notes used random symbols rather than letters at one or both ends of the serial numbers; compare the $5 and $1 Silver Certificates much further down the thread. Besides the 1869 USNs, all Coin Notes (Series 1890 and 1891) used the solid-star suffix. Actual large-size star notes (replacement notes) always use a hollow-centered star in the serial....
