I have a large gold coin from 1887 which looks very like a sovereign (Victoria young head). It is, however, 35mm in diameter and roughly 2mm thick. It also has a gold ornate loop on the top so that it can be worn as a pendant. It's very heavy as you would expect. Does anyone have any further information about this coin? How much is it worth?
Sounds like it might be something somebody made as jewelry. The Victoria young head 5 pounds was struck in 1830. They struck another in 1887 but the design showed the Queen much older with a veil. Do you have a pic ?

is there damage to the coin in any way solder ect. a five pound can be worth 3-400 pounds in good condition but damage only its gold value
ahh sorry i looked at the picture damn shame its mounted, the only benefit with sovereigns is that the more they mount and ruin the greater the value of whats left. i have a full sovereign with exactly same mount and its only worth gold content. half sovereigns are worth lot more than there gold content because fewer were made and those that were were very popular for rings. the 2 pound and 5 pound are worth more as same thing less of them made.if that was sydney mint it would be worth about 3500 uk pounds as those are extremley rare.even mounted it would make near that but alas its not.but its still worth about 200-250 as it stands, if it wasint mounted you could double that.
Where should the mintmark be for the 5 pound coin? I also have a two pound coin from 1902. What mint is this and how much is it worth? Also - do you have any idea if the mount is made of gold? One last question: do you have any idea roughly the grade of these coins? If not, how would I get them graded? Thanks for the info.
I'm afraid the coin would be considered damaged and as such ungradeable. Even it were not mounted - it has several serious dents and marks and suffers from excessive wear. It also appears as if it might have been engraved at one time and then had the engraving removed - possibly by a successive owner. As for the mint mark - it is found under the right rear hoof of the horse on the reverse. This coin has none which would indicate it was struck in London.
