Here is another small batch from the old time collection. I grabbed-up some interesting copper this time. These coins seem to be in nice condition for their age.

Insurrection Coin! Austrian Netherlands or the United States of Belgium

My personal favorite in this batch is the Liard coin from Belgium. This coin is in very nice condition & is dated during the insurrection (1790). The insurrection is when the lower Netherlands revolted against the Holy Roman Empire ruled by Joseph II. They rioted & defeated the local garrisons & formed their United States of Belgium. This “insurrection or “United States of Belgium” formed in January 1790 & only lasted less than a year.

I learned a lot from this little coin. Let me know if you have anything to add about this one.

The Italy 10 Centesimi coin is dated 1867 with H mintmark. My friend said “anything that old with 30% red belongs in your collection”. Yep, I bought it.

This 1855 Netherlands 5-cent piece is a little coin. It is really thin (like a US three cent silver).

    Hello Ripley,

My new Conder is from 1794. (I think it is a Conder). I like the obverse castle & motto “For Change Not Fraud - Bridgewater Halfpenny”.

On the reverse, it says “I Holloway and Son - Drapers Post Office” and there is marking on the edge.

    This puppy is old.

The design and size is what drew me to this 1807 Austrian 30 Kreuzer. It is like the diameter of a US dollar and has a great design on both the obverse & reverse. The coin seems to have some damage on the rim(s) but I suspect that is pretty common on such a large soft copper piece. It certainly is nice & original looking. I believe that the large S mintmark means that it was minted in Smolnik Hungary.

Very nice. Do you pick all of these from junkboxes on the cheap?

hiho off to work we go

Your Insurrection Liard is in excellent condition, a strong XF at the very least. I found one years ago that NGC graded MS-64BN, and the reverse of yours with the angel head mint mark is almost as nice.

These are becoming harder and harder to find.

    Hello Ardatirion,

I suspect that several of these coins have spent their time in the proverbial dealer’s junk box. I suspect that my friend the old-time collector found some of these coins as dealer’s 50%-off specials. I have been buying them from this one old time collection. My friend allows me to buy what I like from his collection. Eventually, I hope that he will allow me to catalog his entire collection and offer it for sale. In the mean time, I will be very content to keep going through his coins and buy what I like.

If you do a quick search at CT for the word “batch” as in “Another batch from old-time collection” you will find several posts from me that are from this same old time collection. Here are photos depicting three of the previous “batch”s of coins.

    1842 over 0

This is the last coin in the batch. It is an 1842 one quart from Gibraltar. The date looks like 2 over 0 & I thought that this might be special. However, the Krause catalog lists the 2 over 0 as the normal business strike with 97,000 coins made. There is no 1840 and there is no 1842 listed in Krause. Only the 1842 over 0 is listed. It is still a neat old coin.
