Hi, I got my Silver Proof set last week from the US Mint. When I opened it I saw that it had an extra dime (see attached) in the plastic case. Does this count as any type of error or add any extra value to the set? I'm a casual collector and don't have much experience with errors. Thanks for your input! -Kelly
The coin itself is completely normal and I don't think this happens to often. But anything is possible,as of value its worth whatever there going for today I suggest recent sales on ebay as a start. For the extra dime I would think $10-$20 you are very lucky.
No, it is not considered a Mint Error. It is a Mint Screw-up! It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it!
Since those lenses aren't sealed, though, it would be easy enough to fake this. I doubt you'll get much traction on it as a "rarity".
Very interesting human error, but I don't think you would be able to realize much of a premium on it if you decided to try selling, unique though...
Looks like an error in the Packaging, you would think quality control would have caught it? it's really Cool though plus you got Free silver, no wonder the Mint keeps raising prices lol lol, does the Dime move about freely in the case?
Thanks for all your feedback! The extra dime appears to have some scratches on it. May just keep it this way for the novelty factor. I wonder if they have machines load these up or do it by hand?
It's a packaging error, but much scarcer than the 'missing Cent or Quarter or?' that are found in sets. First 'extra' coin I've heard of in a newer set, for sure; but they are not unique or rare.
@ KRT- it's why i asked, at least it's not roaming free to damage all of them, if it's not anything that will add value to the set you might want to crack the extra Dime out?
I have a 1968 Mint Set like that (extra coin in the slot) although I didn't luck out and get extra SILVER like you did...plus a 1969 Mint Set missing the dime (empty slot.) Think I lost 9 cents on the whole haha... I think if I were to auction them off, there would be someone willing to pay a slight premium for the novelty of it, but probably not much. Pretty cool, thanks for sharing. Here are my sets:
