try collecting silver and clad roosevelt dimes, or maybe mercury dime. i had tons of fun collecting those
how much should i pay a piece for them i have one 1954 i found in change but other then that my coin shop wants a 1.50 and up
the clad you can find, the silver you can BU silver for about 2-3 dollars depending where you look and the year. 1946-1952 may cost you a little more.
o ok well i found a silver rosevelt in change it was a 1954 well i am going to the coin shop at 10 30 this morning to buy some and when i get back i will put the years and how much i paid for them and see if i got a good deal i have two commerative half dollars to see if he wants to buy them
If you want to shell out the money for it, the Grey Sheet has weekly issues and can provide up-to-date information about wholesale prices on coins, and is considered by many to be invaluable. More information/subscription forms can be found at www.greysheet.com If you don't want to spend that much now, Numismedia also offers a "fair market value" price guide for free. It is very well organized and easy use, and can be found here: http://numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml If you haven't already left, it might be helpful to at least consult the FMV guide above to arm yourself with some foreknowledge to avoid making some bad deals.
I would also consider uncirculated silver eagles. They are not that expensive a piece, around $20. Silver roosevelt dimes and silver washington quarters would also be good. One thing I do is get some modern coin storage folders and just put away coins that are in circulation. That way I dont have to spend money them. You can also get new coins from banks, straight from the mint.
See Franks's post and then read it again. Before deciding on something get a red book or find a book on something you are interested in. Read it, then start looking at coins, maybe working or talking to dealers about the coin of interest - and then start buying. Maybe it will prevent you from making some of the mistakes others have made by not learning enough before buying. See this thread for some of the mistakes we have made. Always remember to have fun collecting. Nothing wrong with dimes, but look at some of the other things people have done. Search on Lehigh and see his war nickel set, search on kanga and see his amazing type set, The penny lady for wonderful IHC's. Personally I like the idea of a graded(PCGS or NGC) 20th century type set(no gold) first. From there maybe pick one and do a complete set in a certain grade - like speedy and his franklins, etc. There are a lot of choices and getting some books first will only help.
