Went down to the terrible little collectible shop in the strip mall here today. Last time I was there, I pointed out five fake trade dollars in their trays. (They give me good deals now, lol)

    For $3.00
    - Hungary 1896 2 (pfennig?), G
    - Germany 1902 J 5 pfennig, VG
    - UK 1913 sixpence, VF
    - Liberia 1/2 cent, 1941, MS, some residue
    - USSR 10 kopeck, 1991, MS
    - Upper Canada half penny, VG corroded
    - UK 2 pound Di and Prince commem, 1981, MS
    - Palestine 2 mils, 1942, AU
    - India 1/12 anna, 1933, EF
    - Netherlands 1/2 cent, 1906, EF
    - Saudi Arabia quarter riyal, AU
    - Yugoslavia 5 dinar, 1945, EF
    - Austria 1 pfennig 1885, F
    - Panama 1 1/4 1940, VF
    - Germany 5 marks, 1951 G, F
    - US 2 cent piece 1864, horribly corroded
    - US 1 cent, blank planchet
    - Imperial China, Jiangsu province 10 cash, c. 1900

    The kicker?
    - UK 1 pound, 1989
    - Germany 1 euro, 2002

I've already traded most all of them for a massive profit.

Thats an incredible deal for $3.
The Euro coin alone is worth a buck 50.

Did you take a picture before you traded it all away?

Obviously, the pound coin & the Euro are valued at more than the $3 paid.

Sure, but what would you do if you came back from a trip and discovered you have some foreign money in coins left? Keeping them for the next trip is usually not a realistic option. So maybe somebody gave the pieces to the dealer, knowing that any other way of turning it into usable money would be about as non-profitable. :)

By the way, that 5 DM coin is worth €2.56 if you turn it in here. That is roughly $3.80 in US dollars. But again, the airline ticket for the trip may "eat" that potential profit, hehe.

Guess you don't have them any more :) but just for the record, the Hungarian coin would be a 2 fillér piece. And the Austrian one is 1 kreuzer.

I was on a garage sale run and stopped at a ragged looking area, the guy had a few picture frames with all types of foreign currency in them, and several MPC's. I told him i was interested in the foreign currency and did not care on the frames. He said he would sell me the frames for $15.00, and I got them. They had 98 pieces of all types currency. Some were very nice. Going from good to UNC. Enjoyed that buy. :)-O) took the frames to Good Will.

I should have known that. If you ever seen Army of Darkness, it was kinda like that. "CLATU. VERATA. NIC....*cough cough*" MARKS! MILS! FIL...*cough cough*.

I still have them in hand, but they're destined for another. I had my fun just searching them out. I only ended up keeping the Chinese piece and the circulating ones. The nicer ones I gave away/traded for some early Chinese Republic. And the rest I sold for $4.

These chaps obviously have no idea of the value of what they are selling. The British £2 coin alone is worth more face value (never mind numismatic value) than what you paid for the whole lot... Its a wonder these people can stay in business, unless the people they buy stuff in from are even dafter than they are, which makes me wonder how and why they managed to get out and wonder off to a shop to sell things without any competent adult supervision...

Well, see my comment in msg #6. If you travel to a certain country a lot, it sure makes some sense to keep coins from that country for your next trip. But otherwise the pieces are worthless from a "practical" point of view.

So maybe some customer told that dealer, here, you can have this, cheap or even free, who knows. And he is now nice enough to sell it at less than face ...
