This isn't quite roll hunting but it is a find out of the ordinary. I used to go through $20 in pennies every week but after I had cataract surgery I can't see well enough so I had to give it up. Yesterday I made the mistake of parking under a tree that is a favorite of a flock of starlings. I almost had to use a ice scraper to clean a spot on the windshield to see through so I could drive to the car wash. When I got there this afternoon I went inside to ask the cashier for $5 in quarters for the wash. The woman in line in front of me apparently was desperate for some smokes and she paid for them with a pocket full of change that included the "Ike". I asked the cashier if I could buy the Ike and he gladly traded it to me for a bill, he said that half dollar and dollar coinage is a pain in the butt when cashing out the register. I then asked for the $5 in quarters for the wash and proceeded to the wash to clean up the car. I noticed the W mintmark as I was feeding the machine and promptly put it in my pocket. The proof was pretty smudged so I soaked it in some acetone and gently wiped it with a soft cloth. It isn't half bad for coming out of change! I probably should go buy a Lottery ticket too.
You should not have wiped the Ike (even gently) because it leaves hairlines that can never be removed.
That happened to me a couple of years ago. I went out to my car in the morning to go to work, and it was so full of bird doo-doo that at first I thought someone had thrown white paint all over the car.
I totally agree, wiping leaves hairline scratches. I should have taken pics before and after. The person who circulated this coin obviously didn't care. I hope to reassure you that the coin looks better now. It isn't really a high dollar rarity, the rarity being getting one in your change.
I would like to give you a like for this post but out of sympathy for those who have to clean up this kind of mess........Man does that stuff destroy the best of wax jobs!
