I have a few (and run across many) defaced coins.. from Date scratched into .. names,Masonic stamps, to offensive words..
I was thinking of starting an Album of them... just as a historical thing, A date carved with names on a Ike with VEGAS '73.. Sucks! But.... It is a moment in time..
I have a Two Cent Piece with the "E" in CENT replaced with another letter... It is offensive... and a shame that it was done.. but done it was ( I wonder when? Was that Word in use in the 1800's?).. so what do I do.. just toss the coin? No.. Now I do pass on them in my searching and would never buy one.. but thinking about keeping the "Special" (LOL) ones..

Anyone ever do this? Anyone want to donate any junk?

I know.. Gross... But why not have a GROSS ALBUM?
I will color it RED and put Horns on it...

Yes it was, and earlier, just not as openly as it is today, unfortunately.

    The U v. E was probably done in the 1800's. I think that's a popular modification.

I know many collectors who collect defaced coins, it's a popular hobby for those who don't have the financial means to chase MS70s like many on the forum do.

Yep--Got a large cent with this counterstamp. Maybe I should start a collection of these! Let's see--2 cent piece, large cent--any IH anyone know of?

I have seen IH and even a wheat cent, and I own a half cent with the alteration.

Wow, I love getting home from work.. Expecting to be berated by the suggestion of collecting such items.. and seeing that there are others that have trouble parting with these.. and even collecting(?)
What the heck.. I will do it.. (like I was going to toss them.. right) I am going to Make an UGLY book.. a ghastly monstrous thing.. May be fun..

Don't get me wrong.. its NOT a money thing.. I love the '70 grade coins I own.. But buy LOTS and collections when I can.. and find this type of stuff.. oh this collecting illness..

I have a few counterstamped coins, keep them on a seperate page in my album, always looking for more and different ccounterstamps,no value, but alot of history,I really like the "hippie" years of counterstamped coins.

Well, I don't have anything as interesting as the u vs. e variety, but just this month in 2 different boxes of pennies I found a penny with a perfect little heart pressed into it with a little 'i love you' inside of it... Gave it to my wife... Then I found a penny with the state of maryland neatly pressed into it, with a little 'md' inside of it... I wondered first how groups get away with the defacing of the money, and second, what process they use to accomplish it... The little heart looks like it was beat into the coin with brute force while the coin was lying on a sidewalk or some such, as evidenced by the damage to the reverse... The 'md' coin on the other hand is neatly pressed into the obverse with no damage to the clad layer, and zero evidence on the reverse of any damage... quite impressively done, i must say...

Anyway, the 'i love you' stays with my wife, I am afraid, but the maryland is available for your junk collection if you are so inclined to want it... :)

I have to admit that I collect defaced coins - counterstamps, love tokens, hobo nickels and the like, but I don't consider them to be "ugly". I even have a few of the revised spelling coins.
