Yes, yes, yes. ANA Grading Standards - this is a total must. The #1 most important book for circulated coins.
For uncirculated stuff there isn't any better way to learn then to handle lots and lots of coins that have been graded by the top grading companies... It took me a long time to be able to get unc coins but there is no better teacher then that.
And for grading Mint State coins, this is by far the best I've seen : "How to Grade U.S. Coins" by Jim Halperin. http://www.amazon.com/Grade-U-S-Coi...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260225754&sr=8-1 The ANA Grading Standards book is of little help for mint state coins.
Yes, it's great to ask people to help. You cannot read your way to skill in coin grading, just like you can't play piano by reading about it. It's a skill, and it requires practice. Find a coin show in your area and go. Look at lots of coins. Ask lots of questions. Bring your grading books. Use 'em at the show. Yes, some will think you're a rookie, but so what ? Here's one way to find coin shows : www.coinshows.com Buy very few, if any, coins until you are comfortable with basic grading skills.
The RedBook is the pricing guide, though the prices are usually on the high side, but it has a ton of great info. NumisMedia is a good site, and it can give you a general idea.
