I wonder how something like this even happens. Did they restamp over the top of the original reverse or I suppose someone left in a dime die when they switched to pennies? If so, time to dock someone's pay
Wonder if it still smells "fishy?" I wonder when the Secret Service will start confiscating coins like these? Thanks for the post Joe.
Do mints use the same lines for different denominations? I guess I've had a mental model that each denomination goes through its own machinery, but pausing to think about it, there's no reason that would be the case. If employees can accidentally forget to change one die but not the other, would that mean there'd most likely be multiple examples struck before the error is caught?
I would love to find one of those I don't know how you found it but I don't do nothing but roll hunting I figured that would be the best way to find one cause I find some nice things but I never seen nothing like that
With the speed these coins are produced, I would think that there would be many more like it. If after realizing their mistake, they were only able to cull some of them, with a couple slipping through, then maybe.
This reminds me of the quarter/dollar mule some years back. boy did that cause some stink at the mint.
Yeah that's a beautiful coin I would never get rid of that it would have to make me dance for the right price and I can't dance no more so there is your answer don't get rid of it nice coin bub hope you find more that is hard to believe you got that in change how much did they know how much to give you a penny on one side a dime on the other side somebody didn't know nothing about coins I would pocket that bad boy. That happens a lot around here people taking it out of the droor this girl the other day got a indian head penny out of the droor the other day nice piece can't remember the date on it.
So back to my original question again... does anyone know the actual story of the discovery? Hidden in a shoe leaving the mint? Found in change at a 7-11? And @Fred Weinberg I'm curious because of what you said...do you simply know it wasn't from a roll? Or is there a particular reason you know something like this wouldn't show up via a roll?
I might be wrong (most likely am wrong) but I would guess the secret service and a few other Gov. agency's are eyeing this coin carefully. The owner better hope a few are found in circulation soon.
