My husband had some pocket change. I saw this one off the bat of the eye. I looked at what it could be. I’m not sure if I stated it correctly but gave it a try
ghosting is indirect transfer over time from striking so many coins the design of the oposite die is indirectly transfered to the other through the planchets. Although the pictures are too blurry for me to tell much I do see the T between United and States on the reverse, which would indicate "ghosting" to some degree as I understand the definition above. A good clear picture of both sides of the coin would help.
Pam.....if you were questioning the ring around the edge.....the ridge ring explanation is it. However , the ghosting is what I looked for after potty dollar mentioned it. When you post a question it might help to ask directly what you are questioning about. Without directly referring to what you are questioning....one person answered about an issue he thought it was , and another answered about a completely different issue......both MAY be happening but it's best to give us some insight into what you are asking about to get the best answer.
I understand. I just saw by the eye that the rim was puffed in some areas. Heavy edges. I guess I see the pics better on my side. I have to stop assuming lol. Thanks you.
The edges of the penny are puffed then flat to the edge. Just the image of the penny looked off all around.
Can you see a T between the United and States on the back of the coin? I see it in your picture number 5 above, but in your newest pictures, it looks like it might be part of the ring around the edge.
The copper-coated zinc cents have sooooooo many problems caused between the plating process and the striking with dies that get woefully overused. The ring can be because of the worn dies or may be partially due to "plating bubbles" that cause the copper skin to be lose from the zinc. Interesting coin.
Very common...have deen this before and thought it was unique....nope...deterioration and plating, plus little weakness in the collars (?)....we need ghostbusters..
