Actually, Sally Ride wasn't the teacher who died in the Challenger disaster in 1986 -- that was Christa McAuliffe. Sally Ride was known for being the first American woman to fly in space and she died of cancer in 2012.
Except that doesn't look like the image of her being proposed for the design on the quarter. Almost everyone has a photo taken of them in an awkward moment. Also, if John Flanagan back in the 1930's had designed George Washington with his mouth open to view all of his missing teeth, that, too, wouldn't have passed muster as an aesthetic design.
Yes, we all know that. FGO. Firm grasp of the obvious. My YIKES comment had to do with the scary/pained look of the photo posted and would have been applied to George Washington if his pic was posted with his toothless mouth open.
Although not as expert at it as my own state's taxing regulatory body; Only if you disregard all the stuff that came out of Congress which the IRS twisted and contorted with their rules and regulations.
It's not the Mint, but the U.S. Congress that churns out legislation for all of this PC stuff. I think a lot of collectors are getting tired of this, but when has the mint listened to us? I have decided to keep my Proof set collection up to date unless they raise the price to something beyond $200, which could happen. The current Mint Director is "collector hostile" in my opinion.
The first part of your statement is true, but the second part of it cancels out the first. It is not the mint not listening to us, rather it is the useless corporately sponsored fools in House of Representatives that are not listening to us. Nothing happens at the mint unless the miserable out of touch congress approves it.
What about the way the mint sells "flipper coins" to their dealer friends while the collectors get left out in the cold? The Mint actually admitted that they sold a bunch of "flipper coins" to dealers the day before the official release date.
That's true. But the legislation that created the stupid coin idea in the first place all rests on the legislature. Blame the marketing pukes at the mint for the flipper ideas. With the notable exception of the Tuskegee Airman quarter, the whole state/park/colonial possession theme was a complete bust for me.
Arguably the entire series is illegal. The President signed the bill after Congress adjourned, but within the ten-day period. There are actual legal scholars on both sides of that issue. People who went to law school, passed the bar, and teach constitutional law.

If you will read my entry, I said the "Teacher that died in the shuttle." because her name wasn't at the tip of my tongue as I wrote my entry. I do remember watching the shuttle from its launch to its explosion that killed the astronauts. My secretary was almost in shock when she saw what happened. I had to take her to her doctor to have her calm down. Many people were affected by the explosion and deaths of so many wonderful people that had worked hard to catch a ride on a shuttle. The one that affected me the most was the shuttle that exploded over Texas, littering the shuttle and bodies over miles of Texas and also other areas.
My biggest issue with this series is the same problem I had with the presidential dollars: the US Mint has proven it cannot produce visually-pleasing portraits of famous Americans. Most presidential dollar coins are extremely ugly. Not too flattering for former presidents, no matter what people think of them. The sketches look alright but will be very different once pressed into metal. Of course, that's just my opinion; perhaps people loved the presidential coins, and will love these too?
When (they) changed the design for our circulating coinage I stopped checking my change. There’s no point doing that for a grumpy old man. So let them put whatever they want on the coinage for whatever reason as it won’t make a difference to me.
Quite agree... the designs look from horrible to quite nice in the pen&ink drawings they release. The jump to a proof coin loses a lot of the fine details The jump from there to a circulation quality coin? I've seen nicer looking knock out washers from an electrical box.
Jeff sound like your just tired. Try a nap in the afternoon. The mint is out of touch. Look at the new nickels and the shield cents. You want more of that?
