Why does a coin even need a mintmark ?....

    Of course us collectors want the mint mark and date. It is important for countries to control their money supply, which includes tight control of their annual mintage of currency. It is also another way to deter fakes. Also, it allows the country to pull coins if the metal value exceeds the currency value (eg. silver dollars, quarters, dimes and copper pennies).
