Hey everyone. Okay, I have asked many people and other forums if they knew what this coin was, but they had no idea. I present to you a 1793 Isaac Newton Farthing. I have searched and searched everywhere, but all I am finding are either the halfpennies or other farthings, but with the olive design on the reverse, instead of the seated woman shown on mine. Any ideas? Thank you! Ryan
It is a Conder token associated to the English county of Middlesex. I believe it is the 1155 variety since the "3" in the date has a flat top (according to the Dalton & Hamer reference book). This variety is considered to be "scarce" in that about 150-200 were made. I'd like for Conder101 to validate this attribution since the D&H photos are not very clear showing this variety.
I checked Dr. Gary Siro's 2006 photo catalogue and now I'm unsure whether your farthing token is an 1156 versus a 1155. He doesn't list an 1155 photo to compare, but I'll post the 1156. The 1156 is characterized by a rounded top to the "3". Please ignore the POP figure in the picture since the 1156 is listed as common in the D&H. Perhaps Conder101 will weigh in. In any case, I hope I've helped you a little bit! What a great piece of history you hold.
Wow Catbert, thank you SO much! You have been a tremendous help! The 1156 with the picture you provided seems to match up, but I cannot say it isn't the 1155 without seeing it. I guess we'll just have to wait for Condor to pop in. Thank you again! Ryan
Definitely Middlesex 1156. Both the shield and the bush that Britannia is holding are different between 1155 and 1156. Yours matches that of 1156. The Pop 7 that is part of Dr. Sriro's photo is his tracking of the number of occurrences he has tracked this variety in auctions.
farthing - I did not look closely enough to see the "foliage" held by Britannia. You are right and Ryan's coin is definitely the 1156. Thanks for clarifying!
Not even close to 1155. Note the point where Newtons nose in pointing. On 1155 it points to the first A in Isaac, and on the reverse the spear on 1155 points AT the N in Farthing while on 1156 it divides the word between the I and the N.
