That coin deserves a 67. I am rethinking my grade on #3. I do think the roughness on the cheek is so far outweighed by the luster and color of #3. I grade it 66+
I like coin #2 the best. I think it is the cleanest and I like the woody color to the reverse. I do love the color of coin #3 and I like the orange peel of the worn die on the reverse...but something is going on at 12 o'clock on the obverse and that catches my eye. I think all are MS66.
My order of liking is 2, 1, 3. I think 2 is a 66. I think 1 is a 65+ and I think 3 is a 65. 2 seems to have to the best overall look and best eye appeal. It also has the softest strike to me. 1 seems to have a pretty good look but it seems the luster is a bit muted. 3 seems to be the worst for me. While it does have a good eye appeal and color. I think it’s contact marks knock it down to max 65.
I am at 2-3-1. The second may not have the booming luster of of number three. But has much cleaner surfaces.
#1 for me. If I were a young collector I’d go for #2, the rationale being it would maybe tone the least over my lifetime. Steve
Gimme the Gemmy . Not so much a tone or a woody guy...just prefer the more original and natural appearance qualities of #1. It's all subjective by preference, opinion and interpretation, etc. Of these three, I don't think that any one is "better" than the others.
I liked #3 best since the yellow toning is appealing. Too bad the reverses on most 1954-S examples suck.
#2 Woody Why are there scratches in these uncirculated coins? Why are the other two turning orange or gold? Why do I find old nickels that have turned yellow, but rarely find old dimes and quarters that did? Please don't tell me they fell into a urinal!
Alright guys, I was a little sneaky with this thread. All three coins are raw but the first two are going to NGC in my next submission which means we should get the grades by Christmas. Here are my predictions for grades. 1) MS66 2) MS65 (maybe 66) 3) UNC Details (Cleaned) I think that the first coin is the best of the group and has better luster than number 2. The third coin might be the most lustrous Jefferson (not war nickel) I have ever seen, but it is also exactly the type of coin that NGC loves to details grade. They will look at those hairlines on the collar and deem the coin wiped/cleaned. But no worries, it has replaced coin #1 as my album coin, and coin #1 is being called up to the majors. And don't worry, I will check back in 6 months when I get the grades back from NGC zzzzzzzzzzzz..........
