Or.. These very so seemingly "lustrous" 10+ some odd examples by the same seller on ebay..

    One of his listings:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1937-D-3-LEGGER..._Individual?hash=item45ef840356#ht_1240wt_939

You can find the rest in the middle of the page or see more items on his page:

For me, those 3 leggers he is selling look ALL lustrous for some odd reason. Can anyone say good lighting? Illini420 mentioned that the coins were at an angle too and that hides a lot of bad marks.

I'm curious what you guys think on this..

Luster should be expected on AU-58's. They are just a minor rub away from being MS. In fact, lack of luster would turn me off, or worse, make me worry about the possibility of a cleaning.

The -001 coin appears better struck than the -024 coin.
In fact the horn is quite flat on the -024 coin.
And all the tic marks make me question the grade.
(Inflated grade for a key coin?)

    Thanks..

It's funny though, a lot of AU58 3 Leggers on Heritage aren't very lustrous. Most are dull and boring. But yeah, this guy selling these seems like he's doing something because I haven't seen so many 3 leggers so lustrous in my life! And he has 10+ listed all at once as buy it nows!

Wow. Lots to pick from. I'm sure they all have some luster to have that grade.
The tilt and lighting can hide marks or show them off. I think he tilts them to catch the color. He does a good job on images but not a great job.
It would take me forever to pick the one I would want. They all look so much alike. I would probably have to save every image and line them up side by side.
Even with that it would take a lot of guessing as to the best one.

Looks like several of those all went to NGC at the same time.
It's interesting that someone would have that many AUs at the same time.
What a tough problem to have.:)

Pure speculation on my part, but my guess is that he wants a bunch of quick cash AND has chosen the Xmas season to liquidate.
My only question is why he decided to flood the market. That tends to depress prices.

Well it could be the pictures, but the AU58 you have looks better in my opinion that almost all of those in the list. The may thing is I like the color of your better than almost all those listed, the 61 looked close - but I would want better pictures. Just stick with your AU58 coin - it is a beauty.

Oh I will, I just like stacking it up against "possible" contenders just to make me feel even better once I get the coin.

Without the coins in-hand or photographs taken in exactly the same manner, it is difficult/impossible to compare coins.

I also think it is a bit of a stretch to declare the coin posted by the OP as "Arguable one of the finest AU58's in Heritage History" -- particularly if nobody, including the OP, has seen the coin in-hand. That's not to say that it's not, but rather it is a bit premature to declare it as such, even arguably.

    Respectfully...Mike

Yeah, I hear ya, we'll see what happens though. I'm confident it will be. But, I've been wrong before. I just don't think I will be.

It's not funny at all, it's expected. You see, that's the problem with pictures - they don't always show you what the coin really looks like. In fact, very seldom do they show you what a coin really looks like. Especially when it comes to luster.

If you had been involved with coins longer than you have been, you'd know this already.

I hope you're right, but remember.... Pride goeth before the fall, my friend. ;)

I love the constant use of the 3rd person.

How can you say this? Have you even seen this coin in person?

HOLD THE PHONE! BNB, unless you have seen ALL of the nicest coins from the Heritage auctions, of the 3 leggers, IN HAND, there is no possible way you can make that claim. Also, I highly doubt you've looked at EVERY SINGLE one that has sold on Heritage in the archives either.
